Have you considered Karlene/Karleen? Flows well as a middle, easy to pronounce. I think Karline would get butchered a lot, but maybe not a huge deal for a middle name.

My friend's daughter has a middle name of Karline (or maybe its spelled Carline, I don't remember) and its so pretty! I guess it depends on what the first name is but I think it is a good option!

My vote is for Karla - In my mind, it is the closest sound to Karl. With Karly/Karlie (I don't have a preference between the two spellings) the sound deviates from the original "Karl" sound more with the ee sound than with the a sound.

I wouldn't worry too much about the first and middle name flowing together. Choose a first name you really love and use this middle name that is so meaningful. I would hate for you to compromise on one because of the other.

PS. I know you said it wouldn't work because of your family, but I LOVE the idea of using just Karl. I love really unique, meaningful middle names.

Karla is my favorite if you want a feminine version. I agree with other posters, you could easily do Karl for a middle name for a girl.

@Mrs. Chocolate: Based on everything you have said, I think I would choose between Karlin (my preference) and Karla. They, along with Karly and its variations, are closest to Karl. But Karly sounds like a nickname to me, and I am personally a stickler for not using nicknames as a formal name. Also the head cheerleader at my high school was named Carly. She was nice but kinda dumb so I would not want my daughter to share her name!

ETA: I also like Karline, and it's the closest-sounding to Karly. But I like Karlin better!

@ElbieKay: Yes a first name to go with Karly is hard I admit. It doesnt flow well as a middle I feel.

I like Karline and Karolina is pretty. I cant stray too far from the sound of Karl though as my family will miss the tribute if it doesnt sound enough like Karl to them. English isnt their first language so it needs to sound similar to them to get it. If I move too far from the sound even if the spelling might be fine they wont get it.

@Skadi: Yes the K is key you might say lol. The generational name of my father and his siblings generation all translates to the letter K so their middle names, which are their Chinese names, were all made K when they immigrated so I think they stuck with the K theme as a family to continue to be uniform and show their relation and solidarity to one another.

I didnt know that thank you. I have no idea where my father and his siblings all got their names from so I have no clue what made my dad choose Karl. I never knew Charlotte came from that same line though. I like that name a lot but I cant see spelling it Kharlotte nor would my family I see get the connection to my dad.

Karline is a new name for me, I need to mull that one over. I admit I find Karly a hard name as a middle name since it has such a harsh sound to it and doesnt flow well. I wonder if Karline would flow better as a middle.

I think the choice will partly depend on the first name.

@Little Misters Mom: @Mrs. Jacks: My mother, grandmother, and possibly my aunts and uncles would all not like this. They are all very old fashioned Asian and girls have girl names and boys have boy names. They wouldnt like the idea of using my fathers male name on a girl especially if there was a way to make a feminine. It might be different had my father had a name that didnt have any feminine varieties, like my Uncle actually whose name is Key, I could see getting away with it there but not with my dad's name. My family is very traditional in that sense, it wouldn't fly.

@Mrs. Chocolate: Oh, okay. K is important! I just wondered if you knew that Karl/Carl/Charles/Caroline/Charlotte/Carolyn/ Carol were all variations on the same name.

I think Karline is my favorite. Google says Karline is the Scandinavian version of Caroline, and the pronunciation guides all put the emphasis on KARL-line.

@Mrs. Chocolate: For a middle name what about just leaving it as Karl? My friend's daughter has her grandfather's name (Murray) as her middle name and I think it's so cute. It's common to use last names as middle names, and with a feminine first name I doubt there would be any confusion.

@Mrs. Pen: I have never heard of Karline. Is it pronounced like Caroline but with Karl instead of Carol. I need to think on that, it does look very pretty and feminine. Im worried though people will just assume its an odd spelling of Caroline and say it that way when I want the emphasis to obviously be on the Karl part.
