There are some nice pull out sofas out there. We have one from Blu Dot that we really like.

@looch: @MaryM: yeah my mom has a truly awful pull out couch- it sucks to sit on as a couch or sleep on. I def will never buy a cheap pull out.

We still need to actually buy a house but I like to get ahead of myself.

If you do a pull out bed, they make ones now that have built in air mattresses. They're actually really nice air mattresses and being up off the ground also makes them a bit more comfortable. I'm with @looch: on the couches with the bar. SO uncomfortable!

My mom has a twin/trundle day bed for when I visit, and it's like a regular bed, so it's comfortable.

I've slept on air mattresses I've loved, and on air mattresses I've hated. But there's nothing I hate more than sharing an air mattress with my husband (who is 6 inches taller and 50 lbs heavier than me). When he moves, I move. So if you expect a lot of couple guests, I wouldn't go that route.

We have a pull out couch from Crate and Barrel. It's probably more comfortable than our actual (cheap) guest bed! Most people say it's comfy but I have no idea if they are being polite or if it really is

The only thing I would be fully against is a pull out sofa where you have a bar in the center of the mattress, horizontally. For that reason, if you need a sofa, I would get one of those IKEA sofabeds that fold in half and the split is in the center, vertically.

Anything with a real mattress. We installed a Murphy bed in our basement for this very reason. Guests love it! There is a half bath down there and we put a childproof device on the door handle at the top of the stairs so DS can't run down there and wake people up when they are visiting. It's as close to a real guest room as we can get although our laundry is also down there and there is no egress.

As long as we only have one guest we always put them in our spread bedroom with a twin bed. We have a pull out queen in the basement and have only used it once or twice.

Hmmm...I'd probably vote first preference as a nice sleeper sofa or murphy bed. But if it's not a nice one, either of those can be pretty miserable. So in that case, my next choice would probably be a double-high air mattress (with an extra blanket between the mattress and fitted sheet if it's in the winter because they suck the heat from you!).

I'm not really a fan of trundle/day beds; even if the levels come together, the gap/crack in the middle can be annoying. And if I'm solo, I'd rather just sleep on a couch :)

I really want the IKEA Hemnes daybed - we could use it to lounge in the playroom and then it pulls out to a double so two people can sleep on it when needed

I'd take a twin or air mattress over a pull-out sofa. Cb2 has a cool guest bed. On sale, a really good one that, it might be a winner. http://m.cb2.com/lubi-turquoise-sleeper-daybed/s419372

We have a twin daybed but it's a trundle that the under mattress pops up to make a full when needed. It's great for guests (couples) and doesn't take up much space!

I've never slept on a trundle, but couldn't a couple pull the top mattress off and put it next to the trundle to make a bigger space?

No pullout sofas, please. I had to sleep on one at 7 months pregnant, and it was awful. I nearly left and checked into a hotel at 1am. Never again!

If the guest room is also a playroom, I'd put a platform and a real mattress in there with a lot of pillows and call it a reading nook. This is what we've done.

@PurplePeony: I have a pullout from American leather that has a tempurepedic mattress. People love it. It was pricey, but we get a lot of visitors living in NYC.

We have a trundle daybed but our trundle actually pops up to full height. You can use it as 2 twin beds OR you can push them together and make it a king size bed.

It depends on how much you want to spend and who you have staying with you. If you've only got single people, a daybed is okay (I'm not personally a fan but I'm probably an odd one out -- they just seem confining to me and I like my space). But they're too small for couples and trundles just seem weird for a couple, too... There are some AWESOME pull-out couches but they tend to be $$$. My friend has one by American Leather and I swear, the nights I visited were some of the best sleep I've ever had.

@skipra: @Finfan: so, with the trundle underneath thing, it's basically two single beds, one up high and then the bottom one is always low to the ground? Not like they come together and make a king, like that IKEA hemnes one, I think? Interesting, I never considered something like that but does look more comfortable.

@Foodnerd81: The one we got is like an upholstered day bed so if you get the right sheets or blankets it looks kinda couch-y. And it's HUGE - fits a twin XL mattress on top but is super high off the ground because there is basically a drawer on the bottom that you can pull out with another twin XL mattress.

We were planning to get a pull out couch but it was strongly suggested that we get a trundle daybed. It has only been used once but we were told was very comfortable! I just don't love the look if it's not tucked away in a bedroom or office.

As a short term guest, which type of bed would you prefer to sleep on- pull out couch, air mattress, twin/ day bed, futon? Or another idea in missing?

Currently we don't have a guest room anyway so the rare time we have someone stay over they sleep on an air mattress in the living room or just on our regular couch. One day we will have an extra room but it will probably be used as something other than a guest room most of the time (like a home office or playroom or whatever. Just wondering what most people prefer. I figure anything with a door where a toddler won't come wake you at dawn is an improvement. :silly:
