Wow I like the black on the outside. Maybe you could convince DH to do black outside and white inside (we have windows on our current home that are white inside and beige outside).

As for style, I like g. They're unique and I think they'd look nice with the style of your home.

@oliviaoblivia: We've thought about it, but I'd actually prefer the dark brown inside and the white outside, that way I can add to the outside trim. He just wants it white. I'm giving in. It's been years!

@SugarplumsMom: I know DH would definitely opt save the older windows! Often the panes of glass can be removed and recaulked. (We had to do that when our dog put his nose through one trying to get the mailman. Dog was okay, window was not!)

As an aside: the sunrise/sunset make me wonder what your latitude is!

Would your husband by open to white on the inside and a darker color on the exterior? The dark brown is charming.

@SugarplumsMom: storm windows often save enough energy to make it better financially to keep the original windows. When I've done historical projects the original windows often just get rebuilt. I go back and forth on windows.
That said we're replacing our windows this spring. Someone replaced the originals with 1970s aluminum frames so anything I pick is an improvement.

@Espion: @oliviaoblivia: "Don't replace your old windows for fake grids! That's such a waste ... how much energy will you really be saving?" -- Is the reaction I was hoping to get :silly: Honestly, I'd rather remodel and extend my kitchen. I love our old windows. This is the reason why replacing them has taken so long.

@SugarplumsMom: Exactly what @oliviaoblivia: said. :) We would love them for our house, but we can't afford the authentic construction or the energy costs, because it gets so cold here.

@Espion: Ha, this is one of my pet peeves. We are in the process of making "real" shutters for our house. They will stay permanently open, but we are using real shutter hardware and correct dimensions!

@SugarplumsMom: simulated divided lights are more energy efficient than true divided and just as annoying to clean. They give a more authentic look. If your home is older these would be a better option aesthetically.
In newer homes builders often uses the pop in grilles. They are cheaper windows, don't look authentic, but are very easy to clean.

I would lean toward the fewest bars you can get, with the ideal being totally empty. IMO windows are at their best when you can maximize unobstructed light and views.

@Espion: Are they more energy saving? I'm not sure what kind we currently have. I found this image and ours is kind of like the one middle; it has a wooden grid on the outside (surrounded in decrepit caulk?) sandwiched by a grid seen from the inside, but it's only on the first glass. The second pane of glass isn't connected to the first one, so looking from inside out, you can't feel the grid, it's inside the window. So it's not really like the 2nd image where both panes of glass is connected to the grids.

I actually love our old windows, but I'm lead to believe that the real grids aren't as energy efficient. Plus, they're kind of a PITA to maintain.

@SugarplumsMom: Yup! Part of the peril of being married to an architect. Now I notice proportional things I never would have seen before. Like houses with glued on "shutters" that make no sense because they are almost always too narrow for the windows.
