I haven't had mine redipped in rhodium plating in 7 years, and now my skin keeps getting a rash from it. I read that can happen if the rhodium wears off and the nickel touches your skin. Apparently a lot of people, some estimate 30%, are allergic to nickel, and anecdotally some women say they started reacting after having babies. I'm just going to get mine redipped and hope that stops the swelling/ rash!

@rachiecakes: my skin did this! I took a 3 month break from my wedding/e-ring and it didn't go away (even with cleaning it). We replaced it with platinum.

Try cleaning it first. My band will bother my skin if there's even a tiny little bit of dirt or something hiding on it. The other thing I've noticed being an irritant is when I wash my hands and don't dry underneath the rings well enough. I had issues with it when I was pregnant and as long as I clean it regularly, my skin is fine! I just heat a mug of water for a few minutes, add a couple drops of Dawn and then mix. Drop the rings in the mug until the water cools down.

@rachiecakes: What kind of band is it? You could try cleaning it first, but it sounds like it could be an allergy, like what I had.

@Adira: aaahh! yes, it's just like that, itchy and hot. It started to swell while we were out on NYE and I put it in my purse.

White gold is mixed with different things, so it depends what the other metals are! But I actually avoid the rhodium.

@MrsSRS: @Adira: interesting! I've never had it re-dipped and we've been married 5 years..
After the holidays, we're in no place to look for a new ring!

I'm allergic to nickel so I only wear platinum or palladium jewelry (so I only have a couple of pieces of jewelry). My skin gets itchy, red, and I get little raised bumps.

@rachiecakes: I developed a nickel allergy later, so perhaps you've developed an allergy to something. I've switched my bands to platinum and avoid nickel and now I'm good (although I have an eternity band, so I do still need to clean it regularly or it'll bother me).

I spontaneously developed a nickel allergy. So I have to have my white gold rings regularly dipped in rhodium.

I have an allergy to gold, I can't wear earrings that have any gold at all in them or my earring holes will basically scab. It's worse with 18K (white or yellow, doesn't matter) but I really only can wear surgical stainless steel. It doesn't affect any of my other jewlery wearing, my rings are white gold and there's no reaction at all on my fingers.

@Adira: not that I know of but I should get it checked and see if I am. I know my grandmother developed a metal allergy later in life and could only wear (dark) yellow gold.

I'm not positive if I'm allergic to white gold or not, but I ended up replacing my white gold engagement ring band for platinum and I definitely think it has helped. White gold is an alloy mix and can contain nickel, which I AM allergic to, so I think that was my problem. Do you have any other metal allergies?

My skin gets really sensitive in the winter. With the dry heat indoors and the cold dry outdoors, I tend to get really dry sensitive skin, nosebleeds, excema, dry patches, etc. during the winter only.

On NYE my ring finger got so hot/itchy/swollen that I had to pull my ring off before it was too late. I put it on once again and it started to swell, so it's off.
I never wear my engagement ring but I feel weird without my wedding ring!

I'm wondering if I developed an allergy or if my skin is just being it's winter sensitive self. So annoying...

Anyone allergic to white gold? How did you know?
