The town I grew up in was mostly white, but my township was very diverse. My high school was mostly black kids, then white, then hispanic, then asian. I didn't realize it had any impact on my life ... It was just what I knew ... my friends were my friends, and when I was young, I was lucky enough to not have parents/elders to dissuade me from befriending anyone. I didn't realize the influence until I moved to Oregon, a mostly white state. I am often saddened by the idea that my daughter will most-likely not experience how beautiful true diversity can be. There are a lot of racial tensions in Portland. Even now, we live in an area that used to be predominantly black, and is now gentrified. I don't want to act like I understand what being the minority feels like (because I'm still a white person in America), but I am grateful for the perspective my early life gave me.

I fully agreed with this: "I don't think I can understand what it means to be black," says Williams, the Freedom Summer volunteer who joked that he forgot he was white. "It's much more than being a minority. It's a whole history."

I've thought something similar since TTC.

DH was raised in the suburbs so it's not like we have very different backgrounds even though we're different races, but I've realized that no matter what, I'll never be able to explain to my child anything in relation to them being black and how that feels/effects them.

I know to me, it's no big deal. But I'm not naive enough to believe that my child would never have to deal with bias or prejudice.

I can't really relate in terms of schooling, but I soooort of relate when it comes to hanging out with my DHs family, haha. I'm always the only white person (AND the only American, so double whammy) at those gatherings. Also, the only one of a different religion. Triple whammy!

I was bussed across town in middle and high school and was one of very few white kids, but not the only one. I remember it feeling really weird when I started college and so many people looked like me! I think everyone could benefit from the experience of feeling lonely and left out. Had tons of friends in high school and was very involved but being "you know, the white girl" gets old and I had to work hard to fit in. It's kind of ridiculous when I tell people the part of town where I went to school and their eyes get really wide...grow up! Take a drive! Get some perspective!

Really interesting stuff. As one of the very few minorities on a mostly white teaching staff, I see the negatives of these teachers never having felt like an outsider almost everyday - in the way they talk about minority families, fail to relate to kids who are "different," etc. Like the article says, having the experience of being a white minority won't make you an expert on race, but I think it's an extremely valuable experience that will open your eyes to things minorities see everyday.

I wish more white people had the experience of being the minority. I grew up in the suburbs and both of my parents worked in the city, so I went to daycare downtown. It was almost exactly half white/black children and teachers and I'm grateful for that exposure early in my life. In comparison, I had a class in college with a very sheltered guy that had never even SEEN a black person in real life before college.

I haven't read the article yet, I will, but I just wanted to comment really fast. I'm having my students discuss race right now in relation to Ferguson and Apartheid. I teach in a predominantly Asian school, but we have a lot of different races represented and we were talking about how the experiences of the "Majority Minority" are a valuable part of the conversation on race, but it's often hard to talk about when White. It was a really interesting conversation.

Here's yet another post from me regarding race, but this one is different. A few people in their article share their experience of being white in all-black settings.

The first person mentioned in the article was bused to school. My husband and I were just talking about our experience with school busing this morning.

Can you relate to the people featured in the article?
