Thanks for the suggestions! We have one of those sleep sheep, it's a bear though, with the heartbeat and white noise options, but we never used it. I think I'll bring that, although it goes on batteries.

My parents live literally one street behind a local commuter train line. The last train is at 11 pm and the first is at 5 am, and runs every couple of hours. The main problem is that the train always seems to come at my son's naptime, so I am wondering if the white noise will even make a difference. I also plan to use the humidifier, so we'll see!

I love the idea of using a white noise machine. I'm definitely going to do some research into this!

We use the Sleep Sheep as well. It shuts off after 45 minutes and plays different things. We put it on the sound of waves crashing so I like that it is a noise from nature. I don't think my daughter needs it at this point (she is 18 months) but we put it on just out of habit. She has always slept at day care without it.

@Mrs.KMM: interesting. would love to read more about that.

@looch - we have the marpac sound machine - http://www.amazon.com/Marpac-SleepMate-980A-Electro-Mechanical-Conditioner/dp/B000KUHFGM/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1321376055&sr=8-1

I'll be honest - I'm surprised how many people purposefully surround their infants with white noise.

One of the books I read in my college neuroscience class (Norman Doidge, "The Brain that Changes Itself") suggests that white noise might have a seriously negative impact on young children with a predisposition to autism. There is a critical period in early childhood during which the brain gradually changes (in response to normal stimuli) from being an undifferentiated mass of neurons, all reacting to every stimulus, to overlapping clusters of neurons which respond more specifically to each stimulus. Once this differentiation happens, children can learn much more efficiently. But in kids predisposed to autism, auditory overstimulation can interfere with this process, causing the critical period to end prematurely, when the mass of neurons is still undifferentiated. And according to Doidge, neuroscientists suspect that white noise can cause this kind of overstimulation.

I know none of this has been proven at this point, but it would certainly make me a little wary of purposefully exposing my future children to extra white noise during that critical period.

We use THREE noise machines at once. We used to just use the Sleep Sheep but more often than not, LO would wake up as soon as it timed out (45 minutes). So this is what we do. We turn on her humidifier (soft sound), her Baby Einstein Neptune soother (it plays music and has an aquarium noise, we use the aquarium noise), and the Sleep Sheep. 3 machines = lots of noise.

Aquarium is the loudest, but times out at 25minutes...Then the Sleep Sheep is still going on for another 20 minutes...Until all there is is the gentle, soft buzz of her humidifier.

I like that the stopping of noise isn't abrupt. I used to wake up, too, when the sleep sheep stopped!

Also, we take the sleep sheep noise maker (it comes out of the stuffed toy) with us when we're out - it helps!

We have a fan in her room because we read air circulation helps reduce the risk of SIDS.... so that also gives white noise. And it's not something we're willing to stop. So I figure if she gets used to the noise, oh well. My hubby has to sleep with a white noise machine, not the worse thing in the world.

@adira - it really helps in a foreign environment. we travel a LOT and we always bring it because you can't control the environment around you. we're still using it at 2yo.

i used white noise when i was in college, too, and renting a room in a frat house one summer. there were a lot of people and thin walls, plus my roommates and i had very different schedules. there was no way i could've gotten rest without it!

We definitely use white noise and have since Libby-Jane was born. She sleeps okay without it, but definitely better with it. We have a bear that plays white noise as well and have even used it in the car to calm her down to sleep (my child has never been a car sleeper).

@Adira, it does drown out most random noises but it's murphy's law that there's always gonna be something either high pitched (kids screeching) or just so loud (car backfire) that will pierce through the white noise. I do think she gets naps longer with than without it though :)

We use white noise. When we visited my parents for a week out in CA I was worried she wouldn't sleep well w/o white noise, but she slept fine.
I wanted to keep a fan running in her room (facing the open door) but my dad kept turning it off!

We used white noise the first few months until we sleep trained her at 4 mos. We didn't want her to become dependent on it to sleep. She sleeps fine without it. I do, however, use my white noise ap on my phone when she's sleeping in a foreign environment with random noises that might wake her.

Turning on the white noise machine has always been part of our nap and bedtime routine. Eli is 10 weeks old and he has always been sleeping with the white noise on the whole time. volume is loud enough so we don't have to be sneaking around the house worrying that we will wake him... Does your LO sleep with white noise in the background? Should I be worried that he won't be able to sleep w/o some noise in the background? Did you have to wean your LO off of it?
