DH's family. We decided to skip visiting them in December and do Thanksgiving instead, which we haven't done in years. The food is all wrong! :bummed:

Despite what I'm about to say, I really do like his family -- I just really hate visiting at Thanksgiving and for such a long time.....
I'm already bracing myself for a week of awful. We're going for 6 nights, where we will share a room with DS in an NYC apartment and everyone will sleep horribly. Then, DS will wake up stupidly early every morning. DH will work at least 3 if not 4 days that week, so I'll be solo-parenting in a city where we have no friends or activity-memberships. My MIL will absolutely insist that we watch the Macy's parade in person, which will completely overwhelm DS and be a disaster. (She forgets that 2 year olds are not the same as 6 year olds...) And then, when we finally get back home, DH will fly out on a week-long business trip less than 48 hours later. Awesome.

IL's for Thanksgiving this year. We alternate holidays since my family is all out of state. It'll be nice, but I'm looking more forward to seeing my family at Christmas.

Just the three of us at home. DH has to work the Wednesday and Friday so it doesn't make sense to drive to visit family. Part of me is always sad to not see family but I also really love an extra day of our little family with no real obligations.

@newlypregnantlady: the first year we stayed home for Christmas, our families flipped their lids. They were so mad at us but I knew that I had to stay strong because as my LO got older and more kids came along, the desire to stay home was just going to get stronger. It's hard but think about it like this, at some point you'll be in your moms shoes and it'll be the norm to just do holidays at home. But I do feel super bad about "taking away" thanksgiving, just doesn't feeling right.

We are staying home. I will be 35 weeks pregnant on Thanksgiving and I have already told both sides we will not be traveling (at most it would only be a 90 minute drive, but I'm not budging on this). We are also staying home on Christmas since I will either have a newborn or be extremely pregnant. I'm only 28 weeks now and already grumpy. I can't imagine what I would be like then!

@bubblegum: I'm pretty jealous that you guys are standing firm. I've been romanticizing staying home for Xmas and Thanksgiving this year but realistically this may be the last year we can "easily" do it because we'll only have one kid (we're only like a 2 hr drive so it's not crazy far). I really want to start doing Xmas with "just" us and I know my parents are going to take it so personally!

This is the first time in 5 years that we will not be traveling to our families homes (not that they're far at all but it is three houses). We did it last year and DS was not happy about the traveling and we were not happy with the complaining of us not staying for long enough. This year we're staying home! We have invited everyone to come over and celebrate with us buttttt that's a long shot. I feel horrible because when DS was born two years ago we stood firm and that we would not travel Christmas day, so that LO may enjoy the day to the fullest and now I feel like I'm stripping them of Thanksgiving too. I really want to bite the bullet and just do it but DH is not having it. He said we are staying home so I'll just go with it.

MY side, and I am SOOOOO excited! In the 10 years dh and I have been together, we've only been to my hometown twice before for the holiday, it's insanely uneven (though partly this is because we used to live near his parents and traveling for it is a nightmare...). We were supposed to go to my hometown last year but canceled due to fil's health (which was absolutely the right call, he passed away last December), but in any case, it's overdue. I haven't even been back home or seen my brother and his family in over a year!! We haven't broken the news to mil yet though...

@Mrs. Lemon-Lime: stuffing is cooked in the turkey. And for me is more loose. When dressing (at least in the south) is a firmer and served in squares.

@Bao: same with mine. Last year was the first year we have spent Thanksgiving Day with DH's side (well one year we made it for dinner and they didn't cook Thanksgiving since they had it earlier in the day, rude) and there was NO mashed potatoes. They had dressing (very south) instead of the stuffing that I love.

No idea! Usually we do a split day where we visit DH's whole family in the morning and then do my enormous extended family in the evening. I'll be 38 weeks pregnant this year though and I think I'd rather just stay home. So we may see who's willing to come to our house to celebrate. Probably just immediate family.

Always my IL's and my aunt comes over and hangs with us too. My BIL is an amazing cook, and makes deep fried turkey that is to die for. I can taste it now. This year is going to be weird for me, I've worked in retail for the last 5 years, and I've either had to go to work at 6ish on thanksgiving or 5am the next morning. This will be the first year I don't have to go to work, so I may go do Black Friday shopping with my mother and sister in law!
