My OB practice has 3 doctors: 1 man and 2 women. One of the women doctors delivered Claire and the man delivered Aerin. I really couldn't tell that much of a difference between them when it came to delivery time (perhaps because they were only there when I was pushing and both times were so short), but I do know that both my husband and I prefer the male doctor because he is more patient and personable!

I went to bigger practice and my preference was older women for an OB. The men were OK and would kind of answer questions but it was kind of awkward. I didn't like any of the younger women OBs (there weren't any younger men OBs to compare), got a lot of wrong info, brushed off when I asked questions, and just seemed very cold. In delivery I had a younger woman OB who I hadn't met and I really didn't like her. She had snotty answers to my questions and made me feel panicked while delivering because she wanted me to hold my breath for longer than I wanted to (baby was out in 3 pushes so it wasn't like a big deal). Told me my tear wasn't that bad but then once I went back to her after I retore she said she suspected it might happen since it was a bad tear (why not tell me that before I retear so I take it easy). Once the baby was born she was very sweet but she was terrible during labor and delivery.

My mom told me that she always had better experiences being delivered by a male OB and that some women who have been through it before are actually less sympathetic especially if they had an easy labor. Personally I think its not relevant if they OB is male or female and its more about their personality and how in tune they are with other people.
My OB is a woman and I must say so far its been easier seeing a woman but we'll see what happens when I'm in labor!

My doctor was a man but never made it ontime to deliver my son so it was the doctor who was on duty that day. she was a woman.

First go round I had a male ob and really liked him.... unfortunately he wasn't on call to deliver me and the woman that was was pretty rude throughout the whole thing.

This go round I have a female midwife =)

I had a woman. I go to an all girl practice b/c I was just scared of having a boy down there during that time. Although there was one OB that I was terrified of getting, she just didn't seem very warm or friendly at all. Luckily for me she wasn't on call when I went into labor!

I barely saw the OB anyway when I was giving birth. She was in to check me, and probably the last 10 minutes of pushing. The rest was a nurse, and she was awesome.

My OB/GYN is a woman, and she was fantastic during delivery. She's super calm, brief, and to-the-point. I hated that about my prenatal appointments, because they'd be about 2 minutes long and I always left feeling cheated and confused. I think I would have preferred a little more hand-holding during my first pregnancy. Though if I decide to get pregnant again, I think I'll stick with her, despite how much I disliked my care the first time around. I'm thinking that now I've been through it, I would appreciate getting in and out of the office so quickly. It's certainly nice from the gynecological standpoint!

@KGalligan: Of the 2 midwives and OB that attended my birth, none of them had been pregnant or had children, so I don't buy into that whole females can sympathize thing.

I had a female doctor deliver my daughter. The practice I went to had 2 males that could have also delivered her, but neither of them seemed as nurturing as the female dr I had. Its weird because my delivering dr didn't have any children, but the male drs both had children. I think female drs can just sympathise much better with how it must (or how it does) feel to be in that position.

my gyn office is all women (it's in the practice's name). There are 5 female doctors, and all female nurses. It's my favorite thing about the practice.

I've only ever had male OB/GYNs. The doc on call and the midwives were all female though. I did get one visit from a male doc when I had a bleeding episode while in the hospital. Everyone else was female.

My OB has his own practice that consists of him and one midwife. I met with them both at the beginning of my pregnancy and opted to continue seeing him over her because I liked his bedside manner a little better. However, when I went into labor she was the one on call so she actually delivered my daughter. She wasn't particularly helpful and I missed having my doctor there, but really what choice did I have?

Wow. 2 doctors? My OB's a man. I love him. :) He has his own practice so I only saw him at my appointments and he happened to be on call at the hospital when I went into labor so it was really convenient.

I had a female doctor deliver my baby and she was kind and gentle but it was my nurse (female) who spent the most time with me while I was in labour. I think I would feel a little more tense if a man delivered my baby...I know doctors are professionals but it would be weird for me to have another man see me below the waist. It was hard enough having a male OB for the second half of my pregnancy as my regular OB went on mat leave!

Olive was delivered by a team of two doctors: a man and a woman. When it came time to push, the two doctors took turns coaching Bee through her labor and delivery.

I think the male doctor was the boss, but wow... he was not very warm or encouraging. I love love love cynical and sarcastic people, but perhaps childbirth isn't the best time to introduce someone to your quirky sense of humor. He was great at explaining Bee her options (including a VBAC), but not so great at the labor and delivery part.

The female doctor was wonderful: she gave lots of positive feedback, gave progress reports, and helped Bee figure out how to push most effectively.

I realize that not all female doctors are wonderful OBs, but it was interesting how these two mapped onto pretty traditional gender stereotypes.

If I had a uterus and all else was equal, I would probably prefer to have a woman guide me through labor and delivery. Or at least, someone who was very warm and supportive and helpful... like Dr. Cliff Huxtable from the Cosby show.

Who delivered your baby: a man or woman? Were you happy with the person who caught your baby? Wondering how gender played into your experience (if at all).

Thanks!
