I work for the state and am in a union. Used to be (well before I started) that we worked the day after Thanksgiving but got off on Good Friday. At some point the unions bargained to have off the day after T-day instead of Good Fri, so we'd have a 4 day weekend, probably. Also Christmas Eve, and typically the day after Christmas. As long as he stays with his current company that will be the case.
