We live in a townhouse within a gated community. All of the townhouses are very close to one another, and yet most people never speak to each other. We have pretty much never exchanged more than a couple of words with any of our neighbors. We all have 2-car garages under our townhouses, so basically everyone just drives into their garage and then walks right into their house. Our immediate next-door neighbors are 1) a hermit old man who never leaves his house and couldn't be bothered to thank us when we thwarted a burglar and 2) a couple who have screaming fights with each other and who we're pretty convinced deal drugs. It's a nice suburban neighborhood, but we got unlucky with neighbors. Our 2nd summer here, our house got broken into. All of our neighbors (except the immediate neighbors) rallied around us at first, and it was really great. But after a few months, they stopped speaking to us. Now they barely wave when we drive by. There's a lot of gentrification going on, so you'll have the people who have been in the neighborhood all their lives mixed with the newbies, the yuppies &amp; buppies who have bought brownstones, the hipsters &amp; artists who've been priced out of Williamsburg. My area of the neighborhood especially has been dubbed "a college campus for babies/toddlers"! My LOs live, play and go to school with friends usually within a 4-5 block radius or right in our apt building. Our furthest playdate is just 10 blocks away.
