DH's approach is to pick out a random assortment of the clothes he thinks are the cutest. It makes for some amusingly uncoordinated clothes but I'm happy that he's a) a hands on Dad and b) has any opinion at all on her clothes. If he thinks a pastel polka dot top and a pair of circus print pants are great together, more power to him.
