Everything in moderation! It does feel like too much of anything will kill you.

I mean this reminds me of that one time popcorn kill a guy. Who would have thought that could happen?

@Mae: you're right :) lots of friends of mine are on paleo/gluten free/pseudo Atkins, low/no carb, very heavy on meats throughout the course of a week.
I think the report is a good wake-up for people who lean too heavy on getting protein from processed and red meat.

I'm definitely in the all things in moderation camp. I try to cook well balanced dinners. We eat a lot of fish and chicken, and have beef about once a week. On occasion eat bacon or ham. My husband has a physical job and wants meat for dinner, he finds it filling and satisfying. We do sometimes eat hotdogs, salami, and pepperoni. I'm not surprised by this article, it's nothing new, but it won't change our eating habits.

This won't change my diet. I don't eat a ton of red meat and we try to eat meat-free meals at least twice a week, but I'm not going to pass on the occasional steak, or bacon or sausage on the weekends, or pepperoni on my pizza.

I think there are lots of things that we eat/use/do every day that has the potential to harm us (talking on cell phones? walking down the street and breathing in car exhaust? how about all of the hormones in our foods/beauty products?)

I'm not going to change my diet over this. I try to make good decisions about our health and am a big believer in everything in moderation (obviously eating hot dogs every day won't help your health!).

@MUI831: Everyone on my fb was freaking out about this and I think that is the thing people don't realize.

What the study says is that for people who eat a serving of red meat or processed meat EVERY DAY their risk of colon cancer increases 18%. That sounds like a lot. But 1) not many people eat these things EVERY DAY. That would be a lot of bacon. And 2) it is an 18% increase in your risk factor. Not raising your risk 18%. I.e. I think the general colon cancer rate is 8%. This does not make it 26%. It makes it 9.44% (because 8+ (8*.18)). So if you eat bacon EVERY DAY your risk goes from 8% to 9.44%. Sort of meh IMO... because if you're eating bacon every day your heart will kill you before colon cancer will.

I mean, yeah, this isn't really big news. And I don't think they're saying that if you eat processed meats that you're going to automatically get cancer. Just that your risk might be a little higher. So instead having a 5% risk, it's now a 6%. Obviously, I'm just using these numbers as illustrative.

I'm just going to put this here: http://www.theglobeandmail.com/globe-debate/editorials/red-meats-arent-instantly-fatal/article26995103/?utm_source=facebook.com

This is a little excerpt; nobody throw their bacon out just yet.

Health officials, Canada’s included, have long been advising people to limit their intake of red meat and processed meats, and to focus on balanced diets that include lots of vegetables, nuts and fruits. It’s not as if we are suddenly being awoken to a latent danger. The IARC’s poorly explained decision is at best a reminder that moderation, as in all things dietary, is the best course.

So we have a strong history of colon cancer in my family, so I have to take it seriously. But it was suspected before, wasn't it? So I already knew to limit processed meats. We still eat them, just not often. DH and I were talking about this last night. Because of my family history and this news combined, we will aim for no more than once a week for our kids. Twice a week we wouldn't be upset about, but I like having a general aim. We won't give them ham sandwiches for lunch every day, but a bit of bacon on a weekend is good for everyone

I thought it was pretty common knowledge that processed meats weren't good for you but luckily we don't get it that much anyways (living in Asia) so it won't really change how we eat. But I think it's fine in moderation.

Add me to the list that's not shocked by this. But I also agree that an overall healthy lifestyle is a bigger factor, and I am just as concerned about pesticides and antibiotics in "healthy" foods.

Then again I don't like most processed meats (pepperoni and any of those Italian cured meats) or most pork, so that makes it a bit easier for me.

LO and I are vegan ... while I'm mostly vegan for animal welfare reasons, health is a big factor too. I don't find this report surprising at all (as it's been studied for years).

I don't think a vegetarian/vegan lifestyle is feasible for everyone, and some people won't care about these results whatsoever. But, for people who are concerned about cancer (due to whatever reasons), it is a reminder that we should all care more about what we're eating.

I am interested to learn more about what impact this will have on the meat industry. Also interested in how much of a hold "Big Meat" has on the USDA vs. WHO, and how the results we hear are different.

It sounds like there wasn't a consensus of the results among the members of W.H.O. that came up with the guidelines (http://www.nytimes.com/2015/10/27/health/report-links-some-types-of-cancer-with-processed-or-red-meat.html?_r=0). I am personally of the opinion that everything in moderation is the way I want to continue to structure my eating. I just ran my first marathon a few weeks ago, and like to think that keeping my weight down and staying in shape will be a key to lifelong health, rather than only watching what I eat. That being said, I haven't eaten processed meats for years, but my husband does and my son will (in moderation!) if he chooses to! I say do/eat what's best for you and your family!
