We take turns. And I try to schedule appts close to the end of the day.

I don't know how old your LO is, but they had a baby cough syrup at Walgreens yesterday. For babies 2 months and up! I almost bought some b/c we had a croupy cough going on, then a dry cough, but it worked itself out over a couple of weeks

I've done most of her appointments especially sick visits. it's just easier for me to take off work than DH.

Hope your LO feels better.

I've done all her Dr. appts alone with the exception of her 1 year appt. When I was on mat leave it was a no brainer, but even now being back at work it makes more sense for me to take the time off than him. I can easily make up the work I do but DH is in comission sales. Every minute he's not working is $$ we're missing. Plus he makes like 3x as much money as I do, so I have no problem admitting his job is way more important than mine.

@Bookish: I'm sorry that you're going through this! I've always been told that if there is wheezing, you should take them in right away. In fact, I waited a day after I heard my DS wheezing, and his oxygen levels were borderline low. Not to alarm you, just to say that you're doing the right thing to take her in to urgent care, since your DH won't help. I hope he comes around. My DH used to be a lot more hands off when it came to appointments, but now with 2 kids he really has no choice. I just can't do it all. Hope things are looking better for you and the LO soon!

It depends. For an illness if I have meetings on, DH will do it. But we have to work all well baby visits around my schedule because DH passes out at the sight of needles. *sigh*

@shinymama: That's what I'll be doing. Urgent care/walk-in. I was really hoping to avoid it because I don't pick her up until 5:30, and her bedtime is 7pm, and it usually takes a good two hours from getting to the clinic to walking out. Looks like it's our only option though, so I'll just have to deal!

Me. Always. Honestly though, I prefer it because I think that he might forget or unintentionally disregard some of what the doctor says.

What about taking her to Urgent Care? It's after hours, so you don't have to miss work, and she is still seen by a doctor. Win-win?

@MrsHotDog: Yes, they do luckily! We took her at like 6 weeks old for a blocked tear duct that I thought was pink eye :p But thank you for asking!

@MsLipGloss: Haha! I think that is part of it, honestly. I'm the organizer in our lives, and I usually have things handled. It's pretty rare that I have to give him things to deal with because I can't. I think it freaks him out.

@Bookish: We did and will probably do lots of steam and cold air as we did back in December 2012 when he first got it. It takes awhile to go away. It doesn't help that he's cutting molars right now and has bad diaper rash as a result.

@Bookish: Men don't do subtle or even remotely vague (or vague-ish . . . even the smart ones!). I always have to be really clear on what it is I need DH to do. So, even after we have had a conversation about him handling more, I still have to follow it up with *so yeah, I need you to do *X*,* and then I send him an Outlook calendar invite. :P

Another problem we have is that he always thinks I have everything under control . . . so, maybe you're dealing with it/managing it all too well? ;)

Poor baby, I hope she feels better soon! And that stinks your DH wont' take her.

So far I've taken him to all his appointments. My DH is a teacher so can't just leave for part of the day. He'd have to take a whole day off. I'm hourly and have flexibility, so I'll use up sick leave to take him. Plus, I don't mind leaving early. Now for when he needs to stay home sick, the plan is to take turns taking the day off.

Aww, poor little girl! I hope she feels better soon.

My DH has a weird work schedule, he has a lot of time off during the day most days but when he is scheduled to work, he HAS to be there. So we'll probably try to schedule regular visits during his off times, and sick visits will depend on whether he can go at that time. If so, he'll do it so I don't have to take time off; if he's working, I will do it because he really can't take the time off.

@MsLipGloss: Nah, he hasn't said it, I'm just sensitive and usually interpret things badly :p He's just a bit of a workaholic and thinks the office will burst into flames if he isn't there to fix everything! And I agree, there is no 50/50, it's just doing the best you can with your circumstances. I normally don't mind taking point on things like this, it just seems like he's not understanding my new job situation (despite me explaining it!).

@LuLu Mom: Yeah that's the thing, mine is closer, but he is salaried and I'm hourly. It's wayy easier for him to take off for a couple hours and not make it up than for me to use my precious sick leave!

@cascademom: Yuck :( Hope yours feels better soon. Last time, when he was too young for the meds, what did they do? She's really only coughing at night, but it's definitely that barking cough.

FWIW, I don't think there can ever be a real 50-50 split for parenting. You will just need to find the balance/split that works best for the both of you. Has your DH actually said that he thinks his career is more important? Or are you interpreting his actions to mean that he thinks it is?

As an aside, you should ask yourself--internally, of course!--whose career really is primary . . . sometimes the split may feel unfair, but, circumstances may dictate which partner shoulders the heavier side of the split.

I hope your LO gets well soon. We actually both go to doctor appts, both of our employers are flexible with time off, so we schedule LO's appt so it doesn't conflict with the other's schedule.

This morning, we just did a surprise appointment to the peds for Croup with LO. He was coughing really bad, then tons of dramatics at daycare. I whisked him home, made the appointment, called my boss all while DH was in bed. He was supposed to work from home today. Now, we both are with LO home, sleeping lots hopefully. This is our second bout of croup. At least he's old enough to get meds this time.

We split it, but we have the same argument. He thinks because I'm closer I need to do it every time, however his work is a LOT more lenient on time off/leaving early. I have to make up every minute, and he has free rein. So we are now on the every other time schedule so there is no arguing!

We both have. There are times where it's easier for one of us to handle it than than it would be for the other. Parenting is a partnership, not a one person do all. I'm sorry your DH is taking that stance, he really needs to help too.

LO has had a cold for about a week now, and although she is doing much better (no fever, nose is less snotty, she's cheerful), the congestion is starting to settle in her chest. I can hear her wheezing occasionally at night :( I think it's croup (she coughs at night and when she wakes up), which it seems unless it's severe there's not much you can do...but since she's only 15 weeks, I'd really like to get her seen this week.

Thing is.. I have tons of meetings and crap to do at work this week, so I asked DH to take her to the Dr and he basically said he was too busy and I should deal with it. I'm busy too!! I just started this job before maternity leave, and I've already taken off a few times to deal with her last cold.

So now it looks like I'm going to have to take her to the walk-in clinic and hope we are out by her bedtime, probably all to be told there's nothing they can do.

I'm just irritated. It feels like DH thinks his job is way more important than mine. I've already sucked out all my sick leave from maternity leave time, and I really can't keep taking off! I told DH after the last cold that I really needed him to take care of Drs appts (other than the big ones) until the end of the year, and I thought he was ok with it.

So... I doubt I'm alone in this. 2-income parents... who usually takes off? Do you think you share this sort of thing fairly?

Does anyone else feel like a crap parent? Cuz I do right now!

*and as a side note, any tips for dealing with Croup?
