@locavore_mama: That was one main reason I disliked mint so much. I didn't want my bank account linked to it.

You should come over and teach me hahah

@Mrs. Pen: I can respond in better detail when I'm at my laptop. But at each month, next to the month there is a little lightning. If you click on that it give you the option to copy last month's budget to that month.
You can also input the following months income and just not clear it yet. But like at Mrs high heels post mentioned; the program isn't meant to be used that way.

I like it because it lets me budget as many categories as I wish. I can input expenses immediately and know how much I have left in each budget category.
I did a excel spreadsheet for a while and honestly it wasn't for me.

YNAB has saved me a ton of time. And I like that I don't have to give out any financial information.

@looch: I actually have an excel sheet set up as well. I am using both right now to toy with what I like best. I have been using the dave ramsey monthly budget sheet that I just print out, and it's worked well too.

@Mrs. Pen: I hear ya; I used it for a couple of years and still check it occasionally for trends in our spending, but I actually do most of our budgeting/tracking in a google doc spreadsheet. Hope you find something that works for you!

We use an excel spreadsheet. There are twelve tabs, one per month in the year. When the month is over, the budget becomes the actual spend and we know if we're over or under.

My husband manually imports our transactions, so it's not ideal if you want to know where you are at any given point in the month. I wanted to get YNAB, but I just can't justify the spend for a budgeting tool when I have the data already, if that makes sense.

@mrsrain: I tried using mint and it really wasn't for me personally. I know many who loved it, but I wasn't a fan! I actually used YNAB as a teen when my dad was teaching me about budgeting! But it's changed a lot since then.

@Mrs. High Heels: thanks. I don't have a ton of time to learn it, and I'm afraid I may like to stick to a paper budget, which is what we do...but I thought this might save time and effort.

I was incredibly confused at first but now I am obsessed! I'm still learning a lot, but I signed up for their emails and by learning the four rule like pp mentioned it helps a ton.

Not familiar with ynab, but Mint might be a good option for you. It shows you the big picture as well as where you are on your budget at the moment. Pretty easy to personalize.

@Mrs. Pen: no, there is no way around it. the main premise of ynab is to budget what you have. i never budget more than one month ahead. i think this is probably the one downside of ynab if you're trying to plan ahead. if you don't already have a "buffer" (living on last month's paycheck), then you will always be in the red at the beginning of the month. the ynab forums, articles, and videos that are on their site are very helpful to help you get started. i'd recommend reading up on their four rules and go from there!

I just started my trial and decided to input all transactions starting 03/31.... but I am finding it confusing to use. Even though I added the future income, it doesn't show up for future months, so it will say I'm overbudgeted by X amount, but that's because there is no income yet for that month. Is there a way around this? I'd like to be able to see, for future months, income vs what is budgeted.

What other tips are helpful for using the program? So far I just find it confusing, but I wonder if it gets easier as time goes on and you have more transactions/income to go off of?
