My DH's job is structured in a way that makes it really difficult for him to call out sick unless absolutely necessary, but his hours are not the typical 9-5. So if he doesn't have to work, he stays home with DD so I don't have to take time off. But if he does have to work, I pretty much have to use sick leave. It's hard for me to miss work because I work in healthcare and have patients lined up all day, but my boss/coworkers are generally very understanding about it. I can work at home off-hours to finish my work. If I have to be in the office or have a lot on my plate we will occasionally both work from home so that we can spell each other off!
