I had two backup friends (they're single) on call. Since I went into labor at like 2am, one was sleeping and wouldn't pick up her phone, and the other wouldn't either but she lived with her brother and we had to call him ,wake him up to wake up his sister, and then she was able to come. She came over and slept over while we headed to the hospital. My daughter didn't even know until she woke up the next morning. </p> <p>Then, one of mom friends picked her up and took her to her house and she slept another night there. It was just easier bc she could play with her friends and mom friend just knows better on bedtime, meals, etc versus my single friend (who also had to go work). </p> <p>For the third night, grandparents were finally able to come back into town. </p> <p>My advice: have multiple options and scenarios in mind for backup bc you just never know. Also have a bag packed for the first LO also ready to go just in case. I did not have a bag packed bc we just assumed grandma would come over but since she couldn't, hubby went home briefly to get her bags packed and to drop off the car seat. They live 2 hours away, but are retired.</p> <p>If I have a vaginal birth, we'll call my parents, as they are only 45 minutes away. If things are progressing quickly (my first birth was relatively quick) we'll call our neighbors or bring DS to the hospital and my parents can pick DS up there.</p> <p>I think that's our plan... When he came over, I took my bags, so he stayed with DD1 until DH came home that night as I was pretty sure I was in labour. My mom is flying in Saturday, will stay with DS Sunday, and DH will go get both of them to meet the baby after he's born and drop my mom off at the airport on the way home and put DS to bed. I had a doula to support me and DH was supposed to take care of DD. She was there in the room (watching movies) while I labored and was watching Robin Hood while I pushed. It was awesome. I was worried if it happened during the day and they were at work, so I had a few local mom friends as back up, but it worked out that labor started in the evening and Bil came over and stayed at our place after she went to bed, his girlfriend took off from work and stayed during the day. My parents are five hours away and definitely wouldn't have made it on time! </p> <p>This was the thing I stress about most in terms of labor and delivery, luckily it worked out fine. Only when she got the call that DS is at day care and we're on our way to the hospital, she decided she'll "just stop by the hospital" and then go pick him up. I had to threaten to go to a different hospital to make sure she sticks with the plan and picks up the poor kid at the end of the day. My mom lived about an hour and a half away. But with my second, she was a week earlier than my first and it progressed much quicker and I was ready to go an hour after having the first light contraction.
