Ughh! It seems like all my pregnant friends have had to deal with rude comments like this lately. I don't get it! Especially when it's other women making the comments. No woman, pregnant or otherwise, wants to be called big. This should be common sense. People are so rude! I admire you ladies who stand up for yourselves.. I'm a wuss so I would probably just ignore it.

Usually I just say, "Well, I have a short torso, there's nowhere for her to go but out." One coworker said something and I snapped and said, "Well, they just put me on a restricted diet, so things will change."

I gained 4 pounds in two weeks, but I lost six in the four weeks before that, so I'm still under where I was when I was diagnosed with GD.

@Maysprout: My initial reaction to "woah, letting yourself go, I see..." is "Wow...you too?" But I usually refrain. I think a simple, "Implying or calling a pregnant woman fat is pretty rude," would do the trick. I know it's confrontational, but it will prevent that person from hopefully saying something rude again. Plus, they don't expect you to say something like that, so it should shut them up pretty quickly.

@Maysprout: Awww hon. That sucks. I'm sorry you're dealing with insensitive people! FWIW, I had the opposite problem . . . I couldn't get anyone to take my freak outs about my massive swelling and weight gain seriously (because I was small pre-pg, and even at my heaviest was smaller than most of my medical providers/staff) UNTIL I was induced at 38 weeks. You just can't win!

I gained most of my weight in the 2nd trimester so it was a pretty noticeable change. Not that it makes it alright for people to comment. I had one person in my office tell me that "cutting out carbs can help prevent a pregnant woman from getting too big". Umm, okay guy. And many "are you sure you're not having twins?!" comments. I literally just smiled, assured them it's just one baby, and then would gripe to DH about it after. Now I'm in the 3rd trimester and I've actually been losing weight (baby is growing, doctors assure me) so the bump is crazy big but I'm not as bloated and puffy as in the 2nd trimester. The comments are directly about my bump "look how big baby is getting!!" and "baby might be coming early because she's running out of room!" Those comments are a lot easier to hear because they aren't about my weight directly.

For me, I was able to smile and nod... and then complain to DH about how bad the comments made me feel. I know that doesn't resolve your issue. I just tried to shake it off because at the end of the day I still have to see/work with these people before and after baby comes. Thankfully DH is a good listener and takes my side!!

@Maysprout: About the face comment, my SIL told me she knew I was pregnant because my face was so fat in a picture she saw on FB. Um - that pic was from 3 years ago, my cousin just tagged me in it. So you're rude and WRONG. But thanks for pointing out my face fat.

My last pregnancy my belly really never got HUGE and I remember one time at 36 weeks a stranger said to me, "wow, you're about to BURST!" And I was like, "seriously? Like, are you joking?" and she got all awkward. I've always said if people start telling me I'm huge, carrying twins, etc I'll probably just respond with, "so am I allowed to call you fat now, too?" lol. People need to learn to shut their mouths.

@autumnlove: yeah for my first since I've got a smaller runner frame and ran through most of my pregnancy I think people were worried that I wouldn't gain enough so I got more of those comments about being too tiny. I might have a bit less muscle than I did before but I still run, bike and swim so it's not like I've let myself get completely out of shape but the comments are mostly on the opposite side this pregnancy despite there being no weight difference.

@MrsTiz: a pregnancy nose? people have weird ideas about compliments. My face was swollen last time but I have a long narrow face so it wasn't that bad, but I felt like I looked more pregnant last time because of it. I had people guess when I was 8 weeks pregnant the first time because my face already had gotten fuller at that point.

Honestly, I've ignored them. People just don't know what to say so they comment on the only thing they can see, a growing belly. I am tired of hearing about how everybody thinks I am having twins. I am 39 weeks, this baby is big. This SINGLE baby takes up alot of room! I just laugh it off and say something to the effect of "She's just a big baby!" or "Good God, I hope not!". That way I don;t dwell on it and the moment has passed.

I've been getting a lot of wow you've gotten big comments (I'm hoping they mean my belly and not me). But there have also been the 'wow, you're as big as you were at the end of your last pregnancy'. I don't usually get irritated with silly pregnancy comments but I do get irritated when people then try to support their comments.

I'm 29 weeks and exactly the same weight as I was at this point last pregnancy - just had a drs appointment. I've gained it in the same pattern (lots first and early second trimester, none late second trimester). I've tried saying 'oh guess the belly sticks out more the 2nd time but I'm the same weight as I was at this point last pregnancy'. But that has worked zero times and just makes them expand their word vomit on my expansion. I'm not self conscious about it, I've gained 15 lbs and still am in normal BMI range for a non-pregnant person, but I may tell the next person who insists I'm a lot fatter this pregnancy to go F themselves.

How did you respond to the late pregnancy comments on your weight gain.
