@runnerd: It is normal, just on the high end. 21-30 is the typical range. So they could have less and still be getting plenty. :)

@Mrs Green Grass: hmm I guess I thought 28-32oz was still normal/what he needed until 12mo? I'm confused now :)

My little ones had GI issues with solids so we went on hiatus. After they were 1 we started again but it's taken 6 weeks to get them to the point of eating a decent amount. A still doesn't eat as much as B does, but she must be getting enough. I was really panicked over the milk transition because I knew exactly how many calories they were getting on formula and it didn't seem like they'd get enough if we cut it out. Our GI suggested transitioning to milk by making bottles that were 50/50 formula and cow's milk. Then gradually increase the amount of milk in the bottle. We just started this two weeks ago and they are completed on cow's milk now. I think the gradual transition helped them pick up their solid intake but without a sharp drop off. So they were getting less formula (which keeps them full longer than wcm) but not ZERO formula. As we increased the amount of wcm they had per day they naturally increased their solid intake. Now I just have to trust that if they are hungry they will let me know one way or another. I'm also quick to offer a snack between meals because they were used to nursing or having small bottles frequently. It's going better than I feared it would!

That's a lot of formula/milk. My Lo didn't eat a ton of milk or solids. Ehat worked best for us is moving milk away from meal times. So milk at wake up, breakfast a bit later, snack, lunch, milk before and after nap, snack dinner, milk before bed.

After a pretty short period of time, we were down to milk 3-4 times a day and now (at 2.5) it's just twice and had been for quite awhile. I give him milk if he asks, some days he prefers liquid calories, but I it all happened rather naturally even though I stressed about it a ton!

@hilsy85: Well we never started reducing his formula since his eating hasn't picked up. It hasn't happened naturally, so maybe I should start offering less per serving? Feedings are a struggle - he's really interested for the 1st 3 bites then it's coaxing. Except puffs, he could eat puffs all day long lol

With that much formula, is it possible your LO just isn't hungry for solids? It might be different when liquids are decreased.

I didn't. I just let her eat what she would eat and drink milk if she wanted with the meal. It's only been in the last month or so that she would even drink a lot of milk or ask for it.

We just subbed milk for formula/breastmilk and gave her as much milk as we wanted. We didn't limit it to a certain amount of ounces per day. She's decreased on her own but still drinks quite a bit of milk at a 2.5 year old, but we moved down to 2%.

LO will be 1 yr old in less than a month.

We have always struggled with solids. it's only been in the past 2 months that he didn't gag when swallowing food with any texture (and on the flip side he really doesn't care for purees hardly at all!)

So at 11 months typical day's worth of food is similar to this:
30-32oz formula
7-8 pea-sized bites of waffle
2-3 blueberries
1/3 cup puffs
6-8 beans
3-4 bites of salmon

the above is a good day of solids.

I don't see how he can flourish if formula is reduced when he's eating so little, but I read that toddler should have 16-24oz of whole milk max.

do you just reduce milk so they eat more solids out of desperation?
