@Mrs D: I'm with you on all fronts! That's why I was curious what you were using. :) I have been using the Orgain and really like it. I probably won't do a full fledged Whole 30 but I'll stick to some of the guidelines. It really has helped me start READING all labels so that I make better choices. I honestly have no sweet tooth so I'm not too concerned about cutting that out fully for now. Baby steps. :)

@Mommy Finger: The official Whole30 response is that protein shakes are not approved. They want you chewing your food - I get it but I also think it is not reasonable for some of us crazy busy folk who are just trying to toe the line in a crazy hectic life. Right now I am using Quest - its low sugar but does have stevia so I would not recommend it.

In an effort to be super Whole30 compliant (while also drinking some calories) your best bet would be Vital Proteins collagen I think...its not a protein powder per se but could get you over the hump. Egg white protein powders can also be completely compliant but I have not gone that route.

While I was doing the whole30 I used Sunwarrior Natural protein...it does not taste great...fair warning. But it gets the job done.

I also like Orgain protein powder.

I have done whole30 ish detox for January the last two years, and have kept much of it on going as a lifestyle change. For January I eat only whole food in their original form, no grains, no dairy, no fruit. I think the major difference for me is legumes which I eat and I think are a no no for Whole30.

Here are my tips/tricks:
-Find a Protein Shake that is compliant, its crucial when you are in a bind and contemplating cheating.
-Meal Prep Sundays (or whatever day works for you)...staples for my meal prepping were grilled/baked meats (chicken, fish, shrimp). Roasted veggies (cauliflower, broccoli, peppers, squash, onions). Roasted Potatoes. HB eggs and egg muffins.
-Find a grocery store with a great bulk food section.
-Stock up on Ball Glass jars for food storage, packing.
-Tessa Maes dressings/sauces are I mostly compliant...lemon garlic is my fave!!!

For me, as long as I had lots of prepared food in the fridge I was good to go.

I really really have loved eating this way for a jump start. I have pretty much stuck with it w the exception being grains (I added oatmeal, quinoa and rice back) and dairy occasionally. I just feel so much better eating this way.

Good luck!!!

@jhd: Yeah... I used to do the same with half and half, but have since discovered I do like the taste of coffee... as long as it's not dark roast, which is all I used to buy because it's what my parents bought. We spend a little more now on classy pounds of medium roast whole bean, but it's so tasty.

@karenbme: I forgot about coffee. My DH has completely given up sugar in his coffee after doing the whole 30. He now drinks it with a splash of almond milk. This is huge because we used to tease him for having a little coffee with his sugar 😂

Thanks for the input everyone!

We will have the whole month+ meal planned out, and i'll check out the Whole30 IG!

We already eat pretty good, but my husband has bad heartburn and I have several intolerances so this is to help him identify some triggers and for me to create a clean slate. After the Whole30 we will transition back to our mostly vegetarian lifestyle, but after baby, moving, and winter blizzards we need something to kick us into gear!

It will be nice if I lose some weight, but my main goal is love fresh veggies again. Its a leftover pregnancy aversion that I'm desperately trying to kick!

DH and I tried it last January and only made it 2 weeks until some family drama derailed our progress. And then work stress killed my energy to get back into it. But I did feel great in those two weeks and felt a lot less bloated. I've suspected gluten intolerance and want to explore that. Meal planning will be your savior and yes, going out will be very difficult but it's doable. I'm planning on working my way back to doing this again soon and just have to get into the mind set. My two carbo loving kids make it difficult for me to not take a taste of their meals. . . .

I started a whole 30 with my DH in January and made it 2 weeks when I found out I was pregnant. I made it another week before quitting. The second and third day were a brutal sugar detox for me, and I lost 10 lbs those first 3 weeks. I don’t think I had any sensitivities but didn’t do the whole thing or reintroduce slowly. DH did and decided he was sensitive to gluten.

Also, the one thing that was a specific whole 30 recipe that we still eat is a spicy garlic shrimp lettuce wrap. But spicy, garlic, and shrimp were all things that we ate and liked before whole 30, we just put them together in that way for the first time when we were doing whole 30.

Also second the whole 30 insta, it's a great resource!

I did it for Jan. I was actually disappointed at how I didn't notice any foods causing me issues... I was also kind of hoping for a palate 'reset' and no luck with that either. Once I got past the first couple days detox it was pretty easy for me. I also found that I was socially responsible with it - I told everyone that I was doing so they'd check in with me and encourage me and not offer me things off the diet. It helped me a lot. My husband hated it and still complains about it. :( But we both lost almost 20 lbs each and I've kept off 12 of it so far.

I'd recommend purging everything or boxing up everything in your house that isn't complaint so you're not tempted to cheat at all. It was nice knowing I had a spot where if it was on that shelf I could eat it. (We have a toddler and weren't making him follow the rules so I couldn't completely purge out the house.)

Don't expect to eat out at all (There are a few restaurants you can find food at but it's not worth the hassle honestly.)

Meal planning is your friend if you get stuck scrambling for food last minute you're more likely to cheat. Most prepped meats (sausage, hotdogs, etc) aren't complaint but your local butcher might have some - which is where we found our complaint bacon which was a game changer. :)

As a sorta vegetarian you're going to find it very difficult to get protein sources that are approved though so be prepared to eat more meat then you might normally. Which might cause you issues gut wise so keep that in mind.

Good luck!

My husband and I did whole 30 this time last year. I started out nearly vegetarian, and it was a lot of meat, but was OK. It helped a lot with my energy in the afternoons, and via reintroduction I learned that bread is what was causing my mid-afternoon slump, and have moved away from sandwiches at lunch time. We already did most of our cooking at home and kept most sweets out of the house so we didn't have a huge transition to get to whole 30, but our bodies reacted totally differently even though we were eating the same things, which was kind of shocking. DH lost 25 lbs, about half of which has stayed off, and was constantly hungry throughout the entire month, I barely had a hungry phase and didn't lose any weight, in fact I gained 2 pounds (my theory is that lots of animal protein meant more fat), but then lost them again afterwards. In terms of permanent changes, we're both on black coffee now and I avoid bread at lunch, but otherwise we eat similarly to how we did--lots of home cooked veggies and protein (often from legumes) with some whole grains mixed in and the occasional treat.

I will say that the recipes in the whole 30 cook book tend to be a bit intense, and we mostly relied on putting things we liked together and flavoring with lots of fresh herbs and spices vs. the whole 30 recipes for things like compliant ketchup, but I'm sure you have a game plan for that already.

My husband I did a whole 30 in May. I’m so glad we did. I discovered that dairy was causing a lot of reflux that I had attributed to other foods. It taught us a lot about reading labels and we were already pretty healthy eaters. I follow the Whole30 IG account and love seeing ideas from all different bloggers. We kept several whole 30 favorites in our rotation and I would love to get back to more whole 30 style eating soon. New baby means we are in survival mode just now! 😉

My husband and I are going to start the Whole30 next weekend.

We are looking for a good sugar detox, and are interested in seeing how our bodies deal with other items eliminated. I'm nearly a vegetarian though, so I'm a little scared of the next 45ish days!

Anyone here doing/done Whole30 or Paleo?
