I had to have my TDAP vaccine updated when I started grad school, and DH is getting his. I'm also asking all siblings and parents to get their whooping cough vaccines. I talked to my MIL about it early on, and was worried I'd come across as an overbearing weirdo for asking everyone (mostly people who will be around a lot), but she just said "Well, what could be more important to you than you're baby? You have to make sure you're comfortable with your baby's safety." I think she was totally right!

My DH has an awesome primary care and they gave him the Tdap instead a tetanus shot a few months ago when he cut his thumb. They told him about the new CDC guidance on it and suggested we encourage grandparents get it. My SIL's doctor told them most babies get it from the dad so my brother went and got it before their kid was born, but they didn't ask us to get it.

This is the CDC website on it
http://www.cdc.gov/VACCINEs/pubs/preg-guide.htm#tdap

My OB hasn't implemented the new guidelines and I am torn if I should get it now in the 3rd tri or wait until delivery.

@2PeasinaPod: I think it's most important for people who are going to be caregivers or around for big chunks of time like grandparents.

@shopaholic: I'm just going to send out an e-mail and punt the blame to our OB. Something like:

"Hey, not to be overprotective first time mom, but our OB has really been insisting that anyone who wants to come visit the baby in the first few months should get their whooping cough vaccine updated. Really, with the outbreak across the country, you might want it anyway, so it's not bad timing! And it lasts about 10 years (I think) so you'll be good for future grandbabies. The baby can't get the vaccine for a few months, and since whooping cough is deadly to newborns, the OB is really trying to make sure we get everyone on board. Thanks for understanding!"

@JerricaBenton: You're totally right. My DH just got his at a CVS Minute Clinic b/c he couldn't get into his doctor for almost a month (I'm due next week).

While I 100% understand why someone wouldn't want someone who didn't get their booster around their newborn, I guess I have to ask how you would know? Do you ask each and every person who wants to come visit if they've had their booster? I just know that we have friends who will pop by for an unannounced visit...so I would wonder how to handle that if I was to say that no one without the booster could see my baby.

@Mrs.B: There was a whopping cough outbreak about 2 years ago according to my doc, so this is why they have been pushing for everyone who comes into contact with infants to get it.

They offer whooping cough vaccine at Walgreens and other pharmacies. My husband got his at his annual doctor's appointment in the Summer and my doc said I should wait to get mine until right after delivery - something about the tetanus component is iffy for pregnant ladies maybe? My parents and brother are going to get it because they will be around the baby right away. I just told my husband he would have to broach the subject with his mom. She's the type just to pop in without any notice (she lives far away) and we haven't yet discussed when she'd want to come see the baby but if it's soon after birth she has to have it.

MIL is ALWAYS sick (in fact, she sounds sick right now and I'm due in a week). I hope she'll have common sense enough to stay the heck away but we live next door so I'm thinking some firm discussion might be necessary.

I am going to ask my parents and in laws to get it. It is very serious and we've had several outbreaks in the area. My friend is my states DOH spokeswoman, and I asked her about it and she told me, unequivocally, that she would get it and make anyone who's going to be around the baby get it. It's too widespread in our state to take the risk.

I *think* I got the tdap booster about 6 years ago at a trip to the ER...I need to call my drs office and see if they have record of that.

@2PeasinaPod: yes, I would have refused visitors who had not had the vaccine for the first 6 weeks. You never know who could be carrying what. It is thier choice to get or not get the vaccin and it is my choice to protect what is essentially immunocompromised. But we didn't have any people during that time who weren't vaccinated or willing to be vaccinated.

For those who feel pretty strongly about family/friends getting it, will you limit friends visiting if you don't know if they have or haven't gotten theirs? I feel like we'll have so many visitors that it will be impossible to know unless we outright ask.
