When I gave birth to my second in March the hospital asked me if I wanted to take the TDAP. I ended up doing it b/c there were a number of cases popping up around where i live so I did it. But my husband never did.... Hmm...

@jedeve: there is a high false negative with the test for whooping cough (or there was), so there may be people who were wrongly told they didn't have it when they did. I had it in high school and was tested twice before getting a positive test result. But because of that, now I have some damage to my lungs.

We aren't even expecting yet, but when the time comes, I will strongly suggest it to our family members, especially because they travel abroad frequently.

I hadn't even thought about this. I'm getting it in my second tri, as is DH. But I hadn't thought of asking family members. This should be interesting (particularly FIL).

@Foodnerd81: Are you referring to the disease or vaccine? I think you would know if you have had the disease - it's pretty unique from what I hear (with the whooping sound and all). I'm not positive, but I don't think it's like the chicken pox where you can only get it once because the immunity with the vaccine wears off, so natural immunity would too.

I plan on getting it after 20 weeks. There is a bad outbreak in Montana, and I don't want baby picking it up in a doctor's office! My NP said antibiodies the vaccine gives you while pregnant should last a few months in the baby. But yes, I will ask our in laws and maybe my husband's aunt who is a school teacher (though she's probably up to date) to get it. I won't "require" it for anyone to be around the baby though. But since they'll be helping out a lot in the first few weeks I think it's OK to ask.

I'm sure they will roll their eyes and say "over protective first time mom!" but the vaccine lasts 10 years so it'll benefit future grandchildren as well!

@Foodnerd81: We have Kaiser and are able to log into our accounts to see a list of any vaccinations that we've had through them. I was able to check and see that we've both had the TDAP vac. If you don't have access to your vacc. records, I don't know if there is another test that you can take to find out.

Do you know if there is a way to test if you have had it already? I asked my Dr about this at my last appointment (pre TTC) and I am not sure if I already had it-- I used to work in a hospital, but no real patient contact, and had to get a number of vaccines, including a tetanus shot, and I can't seem to get my records that actually say what it was.
My sister didn't ask everyone to get it for her baby, so I probably won't unless someone is going to be a major caregiver...

Surprisingly, no one has mentioned this to us yet. There are billboards up around town and no one at the hospital or the doctor's offices suggested we get it. I'll have to look into it. Neither my husband nor I have had it. I think my parents might have, though from when they visited my nephew.

DH asked his family to get theirs, especially because two of his family members had whooping cough a few months ago. My parents got their vacinations early on during my pregnancy because I had whooping cough as an infant and almost died so they're already really worried about it and they also made my sisters get theirs as well.

FIL didn't get his so when he visited the hospital when DD was born he said he wouldn't hold her since he didn't have his shot...it's an airborne illness!

Does anyone know how long the vaccinations last for? My mom went to her doctor to get the booster shot and was told that she didn't need it and that it last a lifetime. However my sister in law's doctor said it only lasted 10 years. Any ideas?

There's a pretty bad outbreak in an area about an hour away from us, so it's definitely on our radar. All of our immediate family members have gotten it because of the babies (or because they were just due for a booster).

I'm slightly less worried about it because I actually had whooping cough as a baby (& have had the shots since), so I should have good immunities to pass along to the little ones.

This is not something we will be doing. I've had the vaccine and had a horrible, horrible reaction to it and was told by my doctor to never get it again. If others want to get it, that's fine but we will certainly not be asking them to get it on our behalf.

my mom and I both had it because we nanny - we got it before the youngest was born, about 1.5 years ago.

DH hasn't gotten it but he will.

my nana actually went out and got it because she wants to be able to be around her! I'm honestly not sure about the ILs...and my MIL is ALWAYS hacking up a lung (she is not a smoker) so I'm a little paranoid! she lives in the other half of the duplex, so it's not like we can avoid them.

Will you be asking family members to get the Whooping Cough vaccine? MIL, mom, and I have already have the vaccine because of where we work(ed). Hubs doesn't know if he's had it, but my doc will check next week when we go in. My problem is my FIL. I highly doubt he's had the vaccine, but Hubs is going to talk to him about it the next time they are together.
Have you asked family members to get the vaccine?
