@blushink: I wish I could just like walk or bounce or something - this strict bed rest is for the birds. I have been eating Indian, pineapple and eggplant parm like no ones business though, haha

I was induced, 7 days after my due date. I tried everything. Walking, Spicy foods, Tea, washing floors... and nothing worked.

I didn't know you can get kick start labour with acupuncture. If I knew, I would of gone that route before doing all the drugs.

Remember that doctors use drugs off-label/extra-label all the time, your doctor is not going to give you something potentially harmful, they are there to make things better, not worse. Also don't panic at the websites above, it is older information as well- the internet can be our worst enemy and our best friend.

My doc explained that even taking heartburn meds is considered off-label during pregnancy just because of lack of scientific data.

Good luck, hope everything goes smooth and quick!

@rachiecakes: good luck! hope everything goes well!!!
my due date is next week but i have zero progress. my dr. says if there is no action by my EDD...he will probably induce me after christmas. I hope my LO arrives on her own as I am nervous about induction and C-sections, etc.

thanks all!
I definitely don't have a 'birth plan' or anything, I'd just rather deliver vaginally if I can & avoid surgery. Everyone's (friends, etc., not the doctor) been telling me I'm headed for a csection because I'm getting induced. It's good to hear success stories. I'm not trying to be a hero & avoid an epidural either. Whatever gets us on the other side safely! Then the factory is closed for good, one & done!

I was induced. Long story and ended up with a c-section but not for the doctor's lack of trying to have a v-birth. Just be upfront and honest with them in what you want but also keep your mind very open to other options and possibilities. You, as the mom, don't have much control over birth. It's all about the baby as most of us have found out.

Similar to @Thehistoryofus, I was given the other drug they use to soften the cervix. I had that at 6pm, went home. At 1 am I woke up in labor. At 4am contractions were regular and 5 mins apart so we went to the hospital. My water was broken by the OB at 5 am. At 10:30 am I asked for an epidural - contractions had been 1 minute long, 2 minutes apart for hours and i was still at just 5 cm. Had the epi at 11am. At 4:30pm the midwife told me to start pushing and LO was born at 4:45pm. No complications but the labor itself was intense and I didn't seem to get a break from the contractions at all. I didn't have pitocin at all.

My director has been induced twice and had no complications. I will tell you that she says active labor strikes earlier and harder than if labor occurred naturally. She did opt for an epidural but, she was able to have a vaginal birth with absolutely no complications.

I havent been though labor & birth yet but good luck with your induction. I think your best bet is to really research the effects of each drug that will be used for the induction that way you can make the best choice for yourself.
From my understanding pitocin gives very strong contractions so then you will be more likely to need some pain medication such as an epidural. Funnily enough epidurals can have the opposite effect and can actually slow labor down a little. Some hospitals have other pain controllers for birth

I was induced but was given the other cervical softening drug (i forget the name). It was inserted about 10pm, my water broke naturally around 6 am and I didn't have to start pitocin until almost 3 pm when I had my epidural. Baby was born at 1am the following morning. It was really not that bad.

I don't have a personal experience but my step sister got induced right before her due date because of pelvic pain... She ended up getting the epidural because the contractions were too intense for her but other than that, there were no problems at all she got induced around 8am and had her baby at about 8 or 9 that night.

I was unexpectedly induced with Cytotec because I was diagnosed with ICP at 38 weeks, 2 days. After they explained what Cytotec is actually intended for I had to sign a waiver that I was using it for purposes other than what it is intended for/FDA approved. The pill is smaller than baby aspirin. The first 2 doses worked slow. Within 15 minutes of my 3rd dose, I started experiencing contractions every 5 minutes or so. I didn't need pitocin and quickly progressed from 4 to 9cm (I was about 1cm when I went in). I had an epidural at about 5/6 cm. I successfully delivered vaginally 22 hours after the 1st dose was administered. All in all things worked out really well considering that I had originally wanted to labor at home as long as possible and avoid an induction or c section. Ultimately I realized that I had to do what was best for my baby. Like Artbee said, when the time comes you won't care how they got there just that they are healthy. Best of Luck to you!

I was all scheduled for an induction, but luckily the baby decided to come before then. I was also upset at the thought of an induction... but like you said, whatever is healthy for you and the baby is what you have to do. When the baby comes, you won't really care how he/she got here.

@lovelife: definitely! It doesn't seem real still... is that weird? I've been getting weekly ultrasounds and last week I was able to see his face! Pretty amazing because even though they are weekly ultrasounds, they're just to watch his growth, so I don't usually see anything than the outline of his head/back etc. I try to keep thinking about that to keep positive. I'll see that little face in person soon! :)

My story was similar...I had no progress at 38.5 weeks and the dr. didn't want me to go past my due date... (baby had dialated kidneys so they were keeping a close watch) so I went in at 39 weeks 2 days with no progress for ... Cytotec on Monday night and Pitocin in the morning. the cytotec put me into labor. I was contracting enough that they only did 2 doses instead of the planned 3, they also gave me some meds to take the edge off so i could sleep before I started pitocin. They started pitocin at 7ish that morning. contractions got pretty bad. I was only 2cm 90% effaced when I got an epidural (contractions were right on top of eachother, so no breaks) which was around 11ish. They shut the pitocin off once because baby wasn't liking it., but ended up turning it back on with drs. okay...I had to switch sides often and the nurse stayed in my room because baby's heartbeat kept dropping to 90s. They had everything set up for a c-section, while monitoring baby. by then I reached 10 cm at 230 and started to push... 4:54 we had a baby.
Don't be too nervous. The hospital staff are going to take good care of you and in general will do whatever is best for you and the baby!

I wouldn't do anything to elevate your bp though. lol ;)

I've read lots of momma's who had inductions & still got their vaginal birth.... some even still getting their natural birth. Just go in as prepared as you can =)

I wasn't "induced" to start labor but was given pitocin as soon as I arrived to the hospital. It wasn't my favorite. =/

Is there anything else they can induce you with? From my understanding cytotec isn't safe in pregnant women (according to the FDA) and since it's usually broken in half & inserted, but isn't scored, so it's not really meant to be broken (can't know how much med is in the pieces since they are distributed to be broken) Just a thought.

On a being induced though, my SIL was induced and her labor & delivery went fine aside for being given more than usually b/c the doctor had someone else to be so they needed her to progress faster. =)

I've been on bed rest since Thanksgiving because of pre-e. Blood pressure has been high, protein in urine, low platelets, crazy swelling. I was hospitalized twice but all these symptoms (except for the swelling) went away once I was lying down on my side for a few hours. So because of the bed rest I haven't been able to walk/exercise/no sex/nothing to let nature take it's course and encourage natural labor.
So yesterday I was given my induction date. I go in Friday night to get started on Cytotec (cervix is soft and thin and baby has come down low but not dilated) and then Saturday morning will get going on Pitocin.
I'm nervous. I would like a normal vaginal delivery (I will accept pain management if I feel like it's needed, this pregnancy has been hard on my body.). But I also understand that sometimes things don't work out the way we want them to. And if necessary I will not refuse a csection, I don't want to cause my baby any more stress in there.

Anyone have a good induction story? That it worked out/vaginal delivery/no big deal? I'm trying to just breathe and relax and make peace with it all...
