28 weeks preggo and re-signed our lease for a 3rd year tonight! Rented a 2-bedroom apartment before that. Been prepared to welcome a baby wherever we lived. Kids don't remember any of that anyway. DH grew up in the same house his entire childhood and my family moved 6 times by the time I went to college, both in homes my parents owned and in rentals. Made no difference to either of us and we feel zero guilt.

Love not having to pay maintenance, water/sewer/trash, property taxes, or the landscaper. Obviously I would love a house where everything was exactly the way I want it, but I also don't fuss so much (or go crazy spending money) on decor or home improvements. All savings we are putting towards our student loans which will provide way more security for our kid than a house we have to mortgage.

We move a lot for DH's job, and so renting is just going to be in the cards for us for the foreseeable future (not to mention where we currently live the housing market is crazy $$$). DD is 3 and we're expecting LO #2 in September. While I don't love everything about renting (yes, glad I don't have to do maintenance projects every weekend but we sure would love to make some improvements to this place!), I don't feel like our kids won't have stability or even have any kind of understanding about the difference in renting vs owning.

I LOVE renting and am actually sort of dreading buying in the future after reading some of the home ownership threads here. I like that our weekends are spent doing fun things around town instead of yardwork/housework. And I love that we're putting $$ away for LO's college instead of sinking everything into house projects and maintenance. No shame in it!

still renting and DD is now 17 months! we have no idea where we'll be living in the next year or two and it makes no sense to tie ourselves down. i had friends that owned, then rented a larger place, now they live with her parents while they save money to buy somewhere else.... all with a infant and a teenager! definitely not ideal, but for her, it wasn't worth waiting til life was "figured out." but there are no guarantees!

@anandam: I've been thinking the same thing recently. Having a family of our own seems more important or preferable than to wait on a house. And it would help to be able to move around if we needed too.

@chopsuey: That's great. That's sort of the direction I'm leaning toward with the whole mobile home idea. They're cheap and once we're slightly more stable we could rent it out and such. Building a home has always been something I've considered too. Must be so exciting for you guys. It's a big project. Please update on how things are moving along.

P.S.: How are you finding being a mom in your 30's. You know people are always debating on not being too young or waiting till your 30's to have kids. I haven't really had a preference. I think people should have kids when they think it's the right time for them.

@sorrycharlie: Same here! I actually the freedom of renting.

We're renting a condo and I'm 12 weeks now. I actually have no desire to buy at this point. I have tons of friends who bought right after getting married who have foreclosed, had to sell, and now live with their parents. I just like our financial situation and the ease to move in our town, which is great. I know we'll have to move into a bigger space in a year or two and maybe we'll revisit buying. If not, we can always move into a bigger rental ;) I say do what works for you!

We don't have a lot of family close by. I have a giant family so whenever they visit, they have to rent a home anyway. I would never have a house big enough to house them. :x Our friends are all super close so we hardly have visitors. I think the perfect life is whatever works for you and your family and what makes you guys happy! The picture perfect life is different for each of us. I hope you're feeling a little more reassured <3

We are renting a small 2 bedroom apartment and will probably still be renting when we go for baby #2! For us starting family was way more a priority than home owning. But we also don't want to stay in this city forever and don't know where we want our family to "settle down," so buying makes no sense for us.

@bumblebee: Hi! So a lot has changed for us in the last 2 years! We rented out our old place, moved into an apt, had a 2nd baby and now we're building our forever home. :P So much for wishing we didn't own! haha.
There's nothing wrong with renting! And I think it's great that you and your husband had time to live, have fun, be free before starting a family. Good luck with everything and with TTC next year! I had my first right after I turned 31. Great age! :)

Thanks for posting this issue. My hubby and I've been married for almost 5 years. We've known each other for almost 10 years. We put off having kids because I wanted to make sure we "owned" a house first. I grew up in a house that my parents owned and I felt guilty for not being able to provide the same for my progeny. So I have deferred having kids. Anyway, we decided to work really hard and save up and almost bought a house but things happened and now we are not in a position to "be prepared" for the kids. I had my little crying marathon but after reading everything that a lot of you have said and researching on raising kids I've decided to not be too rigid in this aspect. So I've decided to deal with what reality is and not worry about what I want. At the most I'm going to shoot to purchase a mobile home but if all else fails I don't see having children while renting as unstable. My only regret now is that I waited to have this perfect dream when I could have had an almost 5 year old kid. But then I think about all the fun and good times hubby and I have had. It's been worth the wait I guess. I'm going to turn 30 next year and I think we're gonna try after my 30th b'day. One more year of savings and I will have officially exited my 20's to begin a new chapter. Oh wish me luck.

One of our criteria for starting a family was to own a house so we made sure to do that first. It was just something we wanted done and out of the way so we would not have to deal with moving for a long time.

I am almost 24 weeks pregnant and this has come up as one of my concerns several times. We currently rent a 2 bedroom apartment, but its in a neighborhood not a city. I felt a lot of pressure to own a home before having a baby but thats just not realistic for us right now. We need to be in a better financial position first. We hope to buy in the next 2 years but we will see where life brings us. I am thankful we have space of our own and can afford all of our bills. We will get there some day :)

I was the same way with wanting to own our home before babies. So we bought a house and then promptly had to move so that DH could take his dream job.

We're renting out our house and renting a duplex in our new town. The funny thing is, owning the house we bring baby home to is no longer important to me even though it was HUGE for me after the wedding. Priorities change I guess?

We will be renting when we have a kid. It makes a lot more sense for us-- we live in a really expensive area so what we could buy now is nothing like what we want long term, but we can afford to rent a place that suits us for now. For example, I don't care about the school district for the first few years, but once the kid is starting school, that will be a big factor. This way we are only paying for what we need at the current time instead of what we will need 5-10 years down the line.
It was different when our parents bought their homes-- then you were practically guaranteed to make a lot of money on selling it. That is definitely not the case now. We will hopefully have our first kid in 1-2 years, but I don't think we will buy for at least 3-5.

We are still TTC, but we are also currently renting a house and will likely continue to rent when we have children. DH and I actually each used to own a house before we were married, but we recently moved to a new part of the country and are not ready to buy another house just yet. It is definitely on my 3-5 year wish list, but we are pretty happy in the house that we are renting today!

We rent, in fact it's more common than homeownership where I live (Europe). If we had plans to stay here long term, we would own a home, but since we only had plans to stay less than 5 years, we felt it was more economical to rent. We will buy when we relocate to the US though.

eta: I always thought I would own a home by now, but my life hasn't turned out in the "white picket fence" sort of way...it's been a wonderful, international ride that I wouldn't trade.

We'll be renting when the time comes (though DH REALLY wants to own a home - it's just not reasonable with his job at the moment.) My parents were renting when both my brother and I were born. My parents didn't own a home until I was 11 or 12. DH's parents were, I think, renting when at least 3 of the 5 were born, and they weren't phased by moving.

We are TTC and we are renting right now. We are planning a big move in about a year so we will probably be renting for at least the next two years. I would like to own a home but considering the move, it's just not ideal for us. When we first got married, we thought we would own before having kids. It just wasn't in the cards for us. I don't find anything wrong with raising a child in a rented home or apartment.

DH owned a townhouse when I met him, and then we ended up buying a new house and we rent out the townhouse since we had LO. But I don't think it would be bad to rent. You wouldn't have to worry about a lot of the maintenence stuff like you do when you own!

I voted other as I'm currently pregnant and currently renting - however, by the time our baby arrives, we will be in a home that we own. If we hadn't found this home, we would be renting still when the baby arrives....
