We're ready in CT with lots of booze and a back-up generator from the in-laws! I got a snow day today and DH is working from home (but he's sick). Gotta go out and do a quick shovel of the driveway so that we can keep up with it! We're predicted to get 2 feet here.

Wanna know something funny? I got pregnant during the Feb 2010 Snowmageddon storm... and that October, all the nurses could talk about was what a busy few weeks it had been in the L&D wing of our hospital :-)

@blackbird: we have electric stove too. Aside from the fact I already hate cooking on it, it sucks even more when I *can't *cook on it when we lose power. During the October storm 2 years ago we used the grill to cook on for 5 days.
We have well water too, so no water when we lose power too! We're just sitting ducks staring at a wall. I didn't think to do anything to prep, hope the storm is not too bad.

I feel dumb now that you all have gas stoves, ha! We only have electric so it didn't occur to me that the power may go out, but the gas stove may not! When our power goes out, we are SOL!

Hope everybody stays safe, warm, and well fed during the storm!

The snow has started here, just south of Boston...!!! So excited. I love getting snowed in. We've been lucky in the 3+ years we've been in this house-- even when all the houses across the street have no power, we've kept power somehow. Fingers crossed we keep our power. We live right on a main road, which is actually a positive only in these kinds of storms. We park right in front of our front door so all we need to do is shovel about 4 feet of driveway and we can get out. Our landlord usually sends plowers but during the last storm they never came (to her house either). But our neighbors in the other unit in the house have 2 pickup trucks and a plow :D

We just stocked up on milk and eggs and bread earlier this week, so today we just have to find some more bottled water and make sure the car is filled with gas. The car is our backup power source... we would start the car and charge our phones / laptops in there if we needed to. And I'd pump in there! Haha.

The museum is closed today so I am home and I cancelled our nanny. Wagon Jr.'s daycare is OPEN!!! woohoo. That really worked out because Wagon Sr. HAD to go in to work today. Today is the last day of the week long conference he runs once a year. The conference takes place in a hotel and all the participants stay in that hotel, so whoever didn't change their flight to leave last night is right there in the building, so they can't cancel the last day of the course. So he drove in and is planning on driving home (and picking up Wagon Jr. on the way home, and stopping for our last needed supplies) around noon.

I made a big batch of spaghetti and meatballs two nights ago, and defrosted some meat last night, so we are all set for dinners for at least 2 nights. We've got frozen cookie dough, popcorn, and hot chocolate. We're ready!

I am so not ready for the storm. My office is actually open today even though most transportation isn't running so I had to come in. Meanwhile I have no food in the house whatsoever and by the time I can make it to the grocery store it will be ransacked. They don't make shipments into Manhattan during and right after storms so I don't know what we're going to do..

@Foodnerd81: when you have a well you lose water when the power is out. Whe you don't have water you can fill the tank you make the toilet flush.

@blackbird: With a gas range you turn on the gas & light it with a match or lighter when there is no power. I would be very happy with all that French toast!

@Anagram: That seems like a lot of milk, but maybe they had LOs and planned to be stuck inside for a couple days. LOs drink tons of milk! Plus you use milk & eggs to make a lot of other things and they take longer to restock than non perishable items after a storm.

@blackbird: If you have a gas stove, maybe you can still cook? I don't know, I've had an electric stove for a while, so when we lose power, we are out of luck on cooking. I think it's also in case you can't get out to the store, even if you don't lose power. I like the idea of living on french toast though!

I don't understand a lot of the things people do for storm prep though. Took me years, literally, to understand why people to fill up the bathtub-- like, ew, are people going to drink bathtub water? (You use it to help flush the toilet, somehow).

Yeah but....how do you cook the eggs without power?! lol. I guess unless you boiled them all first then just munched on boiled eggs? And it really sucks to not be able to get anything out of your fridge for 48 hours!

@blackbird: when hurricane sandy hit, allll the eggs and milk were gone first, and I wondered the same thing. If the electricity goes out, what do you do with it all? Esp because with Sandy, it wasn't cold enough to store it outside or anything (plus, where we live, everyone lives in highrise apartments, so there isn't really an "outside" to keep stuff.

But I still saw people loading up their carts with 4-5 jugs of milk. =) I bought one small can of powdered milk, just in case we didn't have electricity for a loooong time, like 3 weeks, and we wanted cereal. Didn't end up using it.

@blackbird: i wouldn't worry about the eggs! we turn the fridge & freezer to a colder setting before storms so things get extra cold, usually if you leave it closed it stays good for at least a day or two. i don't expect to lose power, we usually don't, but just in case! like @foodnerd81 said, you just stick it in a cooler outside if need be. it's 24 degrees out, it'll stay cold =) i don't think most areas will get 34", but we live in an area that always gets hit with the higher amounts because of the hills and valleys, so we'll get well over 2 feet!

@blackbird: Exactly-- keep the fridge/freezer door closed and it will stay good for like, 18 hours in the fridge and longer in the freezer (48 hours if you don't open it?)

Otherwise, cooler outside would do it. You could pack it with snow instead of ice packs, but it would probably not freeze in the cooler the way it would right outside in the snow. And eggs stay good a long time-- some places they don't even store them in the refrigerator.

Wow 34" of snow!

Um....what do you do with the milk and eggs if the power goes out?!?! Specifically the eggs? haha.

The practical side of me says that you'll just end up having to put your food outside in the snow if you go without power too long :P
