I don't think sippys are bad either as long as it's a hard spout. Soft spout is basically like a bottle.

Do they follow the Montessori philosophy? I know it recommends going straight to regular glasses.

We tried a regular glass once. lol.

@Vegmama: i read a lot about blw and never heard this! I was thinking it was maybe against the rules for montessori. I think that might be because they want them drinking from real glassware because it teaches them to be more cautious. We almost exclusively use straw cups and my understanding is that is better than sippy cups...never heard of it being bad at all :)

@Leah: I know! We are the worst as far as those rules: pacifier and bottle since the first week. Thankfully, our baby doesn't have nipple confusion, but friends had me freaking out in the early days.

Good to know!! I just realized, maybe it's against the "rules" of baby led weaning?!? Oh well, I am just happy to know that straws aren't a big deal when it comes to oral development.

Yeah, I thought straws were supposed to be better than sippies??

The only thing I can really think of is that straws are harder to clean??

Oh geez, I thought sippies were bad and straws were good! Can't win.

@Leah: That's what happened to me! On the positive side, LO had no problems with sippies, so maybe it's just as well that she never took a bottle.

My goodness! People find something wrong with everything! Pacifiers are bad, bottles are bad, and on and on. I wish I didn't pay attention to that nipple confusion BS and gave my baby a bottle at least once a day. The kid just doesn't know what to do with one now. That was so off topic! Excuse my mini rant/vent please!

Yeah, I've never heard of them being bad before. I think some people prefer to use just a regular cup to teach independence, etc.
we use a regular cup at the table, but travel with a straw cup because it's more practical. Also do things like soups and smoothies in straw cups.
Just do what works for you!

Sippy cups aren't great for oral development but that's why I thought straws were ideal. It's too messy to do a real cup yet. Maybe your friends are just purists lol

A few of my friends aren't doing straws. They are extended breastfeeders, so maybe that's why they're so against anything other than a real cup?

I pump all day, except for in the morning when my daughter will nurse, so at this point, nipple confusion isn't on my radar.

Any other reasons why using a straw would be "bad"? I'd like to start offering my baby sips of my green smoothies, and letting her drink water from a kids cup w/ straw.
