I have a 9 month old, and I still don't know what receiving blankets even are. Maybe I own some, but who knows. Anyway, I used muslin blankets as swaddles, nursing covers, stroller/carseat covers and plush blankets to keep warm in chilly weather.

We just used a few cellular blankets for in her moses basket and the pram when she was tiny. We don't use any now, but we don't live in a particularly cold climate either.

My friend gave me a lot of receiving blankets that she used with her son. I actually cut them up and used them as burp rags. DS was a spitter.

Yes thank you I'm not the only one thinking to myself why I need so many different blankets! I was gifted some recieving blankets, I'm keeping a pack of cute ones and that's it!

@Adira: Exactly this! The set I got is so cute, but they seem so small that I don't really know what they'd end up being used for! So far I like that the swaddling blankets are so huge that you can use them for anything!

I use the A&A swaddle blankets for a lot of things, long after he outgrew being swaddled in them- car seat or stroller shade on sunny days or when she fell asleep, nursing cover, light blanket to shade bare legs in the summer, lay down on the floor in a pinch... Plus most of them are really pretty. I got one four pack and it was plenty.

Warm plush blankets- one or two for the car or stroller is nice.

I got a ton of handmedowns receiving blankets. I used them more than I expected- lay one flat user us in bed when I'm nursing (she used to dribble a lot, saved on changing my sheets), lay on top of the nursing pillow... I guess mostly I used them as a barrier for her bodily fluids on things that were annoying to wash. :) I could have done this with any blanket but since these were thin and I had a ton, they worked well.

But I would say other than pickin out a pretty pattern of the A&A blankets that you like, don't register for them because people love to give blankets and you will have more than enough.

I don't like or use receiving blankets. I like a nice plush blanket for the carseat on cold days, as you mentioned. The A&A blankets are wonderful for draping over the car seat to give baby privacy when out and about or to use as a nursing cover.

And I really appreciate all of the homemade blankets I've receiver and usually use them to lay down on the floor to put baby on during tummy time.

I used receiving blankets to pin her arms down under a swaddleme blanket once she got wiggly but still needed a swaddle, haha. (like in this video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VZn1J-iBKrk)

No idea what the point of receiving blankets are. We got a bunch at our shower and we used them to swaddle Xander, but they were only big enough for a short period of time and then they were too small.

I must prefer swaddle blankets (specifically the A&A ones)!

I definitely would hold off on buying any blankets until after your shower if you are having one. I had a spring baby & was gifted many blankets. I would guess people shopping for a winter baby will be even more tempted to buy blankets!

Receiving blankets are GREAT for your kids to use as doll blankets for their dolls when they're older! Just a note for those that have no idea what to do with them.. Certainly not a reason to go out of your way to get them though.

I agree - so many blankets. I have one of those muslin blankets, and never use it, I do not understand the fascination with them?

I haven't used any of our receiving blankets. I would definitely skip those. As an aside, usually your hospital says you can take whatever is in the room -- I took all of their blankets and they are pretty much a less cute version of receiving blankets.

Blankets seem to be the go-to gift that people give. I regret registering for any blankets! We use the swaddle muslin blankets the most, but have one thick blanket we keep in my husband's car for morning drop-off.

I never used receiving blankets, except here and there as burp clothes, so you can definitely skip those! The hospital blankets are the best for swaddling in my opinion! I also got a lot of random use out of the muslin blankets, even though I never really used them for swaddling.

A nice plush fleece is great for cold days.

Swaddling blankets are awesome for so many things. We still use them from time to time in our house with our almost 2.5 year old. We have the muslin ones. ETA: our lo uses them now to cover her "babies". :)

Are you having a shower? We were gifted lots of receiving blankets at my shower. They are very soft blankets that we used for a short period of time. I ended up cutting them up and making them into washcloth size for nose blowing. :)

DD will be born in Dec so I have a nice plush fleece blanket for the carseat and what not.

And I'm getting some cotton swaddling blankets, in case swaddles or sleep sacks or wearable blankets don't work out.

But then what are recieving blankets?! Or should I forget about these and just get swaddling blankets that can double as regular blankets?

Baby gear seriously make my head spin!
