I always heard it was for oral health reasons.

That being said, my MIL runs a daycare and she has a 2-year old who still gets one big bottle of {toddler} formula a day before his nap. It makes him sleep better and keeps him happy so I say, why not?

What @T.H.O.U said. Breastmilk changes to meet the nutritional needs of a toddler/child and nursing requires different oral mechanics than bottle feeding so there isn't an oral health issue.

And they make formulas specifically for toddlers! Maybe you could wean to that instead of milk! =)

My nephew still has three bottles of formula a day at eighteen months old and I figure if you're ok with the cost and prep then go with it!

@mrsmenow: that sounds pretty logical!

@zippylef: I think because breast milk continues to evolve as the child grows. But I do know they make toddler formula.

I think it is meant more for convenience/cost. That they can safetly switch to whole milk, which is signifantly cheaper. Lo's that age are also getting so much more nutrition through actual foods too that maybe the nutrients/fats in formula isn't needed as much. I am not sure it would really hurt to continue though:)

I'm starting to think the whole pressure to have C off of formula and bottles at 1 is kind of BS. I feel like if someone can keep their kid on the boob as long as they want, why is a bottle any different? She's 11 months and we are starting to introduce whole milk but I feel like it's not really satisfying her and I think it is contributing to some constipation issues we've been having. We're also trying to cut down to 3 bottles a day instead of 4.

Is there an actual medical reason why you have to stop formula at a year? Her ped just told me that every baby is different and that I should do what I think is best and not try to force the issue, yet I hear "You have to stop formula at 1" at every turn.
