When they are too far apart, it doesnt properly or adequately anchor the car seat and they can more easily break. Basically it causes teh car seat to not protect to its fullest extent. Most cars only have side LATCH systems. My Volvo owners manual says you can't "borrow" so we have todo a seatbelt install in the middle. We get a good fit but it's annoying if we have to move the seat. </p>
