I had to call UHC and get the exact way for my OB/GYN to write out my birth control in generic form. I had to have the dude spell it out to me and I dictated that to my GYN's office. Whatever you are on, you insurance will cover some form of it, but only if it is written that way.

Deductible shouldn't matter. I have a HDHP too, used to have UHC, then oxford UHC, now cigna

Depends on the brand and type of BC (pill, patch, etc.). Your insurance will absolutely cover BC but may not cover the exact version you have.

I don't know about your plan but there are some insurance plans that are "grandfathered" and don't have to follow every provision of ACA. For example, I have great insurance but I don't get a free breast pump bc my plan is grandfathered.

here's a list of free medications I downloaded off myuhc. I have a low deductible, but i don't think that should matter

The loophole about covering only one is super annoying. I had to change the type of pill three times in a short period - first b/c I switched insurance and then because my new insurance changed the one that they would cover. And each time it messed things up... I hope you can get things worked out.

@Bibliolove: Thanks for the recommendation, I will look it up! I liked Target because they had a great rewards program, but CVS's program is basically nothing. I'll look into it.

@Mrs. Microscope: @Pollywog: ah thank you, that might be it, bc it's a progesterone-only BC. I need to switch over since nursing is rapidly coming to an end. Since I'm switching prescriptions and OBs, I might as well call UHC and find out which ones are 100% covered.

I'd like to add that the website GoodRx gives cost breakdown of meds by pharmacy. Usually Walmart is the cheapest for me, and a place like CVS Walgreens is the priciest. With that being said, I'm not sure why you had to pay. But I know the insurance plans can choose what meds and what tiers they want those meds to be in (cheapest, expensive, excluded). So only specific BC pills were covered under my plan (actually covered by my insurance, since my company does not pay as it's faith-based).

I think it depends on the brand. Each health insurance plan has one type/brand of bc pills they cover for free. If you aren't on that exact type, you pay the standard prescription price. It was a loop hole in the ACA. You can call your insurance company for details on which type/brand is covered on your plan.

I can't speak to BCP but we also have HDHP through UHC and it is terrible. Like beyond awful. We have to pay thousands in premiums and deductibles for every and anything before they cover a dime. And just to think it's going to get worse. Awesome!

DH picked up my BC prescription today and it was going to cost $47! They switched me from a generic to a name brand (I'm NOT loving Target's changeover to CVS). Luckily my husband questioned it and they changed it to a generic, but it still cost $19. He pushed back against that stating it should be free based on current laws, but they were unfazed and said that since my deductible started over, it would still cost money out of pocket.

I got BCP in the fall of 2016, but I was over my OOP max so it was free. Before that, I hadn't bought BC since April 2014. But I *thought* all BC was supposed to be covered at 100%. Am I wrong? Have the healthcare companies changed that quickly in response to the repeal-ACA rhetoric?? But it's not official yet!

FWIW, I have a high deductible HSA plan with UHC. I can call them but it's a bit of a hassle to navigate the phone menu AND I don't want to sound like an idiot.

If you're under your deductible, do you have to pay some money for BCP?
