We were together a long time and in our 30s. I don't think I really had this "my life will be incomplete" feeling, or ar least I don't remember it. The experience would grow me as a person. I was willing and able to give to a relationship like no other I have had before. I felt ready to love, nurture and positively impact another human for my entire life. All of these reasons led me to shape my decision. </p> <p>Before this, I never considered being a mom or not being a mom. I wasn't ambivalent or indecisive it just never crossed my mind to consider it. It always seemed to be a decision way off in the nebulous future or something that would just happen to me. Then one day, I just knew that I knew I was ready. DH was ready too. </p> <p>I had no idea motherhood was so amazing and I wonder what took me so long to get with the program!!! In fact I thought I most certainly did not want kids until about 3 years ago. Because they're not just my kids, they're the descendants of my grandparents and great grandparents, and I want their legacy to live on. Because I loved them before they existed in any way. Because I thought I had so much to give them (maybe I was wrong there...) Because DH felt the same way.</p> <p>For a while I thought I shouldn't, because my immediate family is pretty messed up and the idea of my kids inheriting their genes or attitudes... nope. That was a tough thing to come to terms with, but I was ready to never have kids if that's what it took to not bring them into a bad family. I am not someone who always wanted children or who wanted a huge family.</p> <p>I think the honest answer is that my mom died when I was in my late 20s and it left a hole in my heart and an empty spot in my family right around the time that DH and I got married and when we were having discussions about starting a family anyway. We waited a few years to be certain but it just felt right. DD has certainly filled the hole in my heart and then some. The decision to have #2 was actually a little harder but I just didn't feel like our family was complete.
