@livsmama & @baby boy mom: Thanks! I was wondering why they weren't able to determine it with me... I didn't get a late pregnancy ultrasound.

#1 Failure to progress after 33 hours, only dilated to a 4. Rough recovery. I mourned the loss of my vajayjay birth, but came to terms with it when my OB said he would have never fit.

#2 Scheduled C-section, but went into labour two days prior. Thought about trying a VBAC, but decided to just do C-section. Arrived at hospital at 7p at 1cm, was in OR by 9:30 at 3cm, she was out by 10:23p. Contractions were awful, but recovery was a dream... I was in the hospital for less than 48 hours and up and walking within 12 hours.

@oliviaoblivia: I was the same, definitely didn't want a c-section if I could avoid it! But my recovery was so much easier than I thought it would be so I wouldn't be opposed to another c-section down the road.

I had a host of issues leading up to c-section.
My blood pressure required an induction. 47 hours later I was dilated to 4/5 cm. baby's heart rate became elevated. She was sunny side up, wedged in my pelvis and over ten pounds. Unless she flipped, there was no way she was coming down the chute.

I was so opposed to the surgery and bawled when they said I had to have it, but I'm not at all opposed to c-section #2. My recovery has been so easy. I have a friend that birthed a 9.5 pounder a few weeks later with a fourth degree tear. She's still not sitting down comfortably. It put things into perspective for me.

Not enough progress after 2 1/2 hours of pushing, I spiked a fever and LO's heart rate was higher than they were comfortable with, so they were worried of infection. She was also sunny side up & was just too big for my body.

I am going to have a scheduled C-section because I have complete placenta previa where the placenta covers the cervix - i.e. the exit is totally blocked. So they don't want me to go into labor because it could cause complications due to bleeding.

fetal heart rate issues during induction (induction was for medical reasons). Post surgery, the doctor commented that she didn't feel I could have delivered vaginally as LO's head was wedged into my pelvis. She had a very mild cone to her head at first.

@Foodnerd81: I always heard of c - sections being pushed for those reasons, too, and that "failure to progress" was code for "doc wants to go home." My experience was way different than that, though, and I really feel my c - section was necessary. I gave birth on Christmas Eve and never felt rushed. The doctor even assured me multiple times that I had plenty of time and the upcoming holiday would have nothing to do with how much time I had.

Failure to progress. I was in labor 36 hours and LO eventually descended a lot, but I didn't dilate fully enough. I had a cervical lip I couldn't push past, we tried but I couldn't do it and the doctor was afraid I would split my cervix if we forced it. LO was also sunny side up and the epidural stopped working so I felt all of the horrible back labor. Eventually his heart rate started dropping, too.

Failed induction, failure to progress. I labored on pitocin for 17 hours desperately trying to have the most natural birth I could at that point, but never dilated past 5, and there was meconium in the fluid. It's been 7 months and I'm still struggling with having to have a C-section and feeling like a failure. Ugh.

Scheduled csec cuz I had twins and one wasn't in the best position. I didn't want to go through vaginal just to end up having csec. But then I went into labor on my csec day and thought, maybe it's meant to be. So I tried vaginal.... But after 6 hours of waiting for labor to progress, my sons heart rate dropped significantly and the doc didn't want to risk vaginal... Almost had emerg csec but heart rate came back up. Annoying that I could have been done w it hours earlier, but at least I tried and wouldn't have any regrets.

@baby boy mom: I'm curious how you knew ahead of time that the cord was wrapped around twice?

I had a fairly easy and quick labor, started at 5:00 am and fully dilated by 2:30 pm all without medication. However, every time I pushed, baby's heart rate dropped. OB and midwife tried to turn him around but he kept returning to his position. At 8:30 pm, they finally decided to do a c-section and found that his cord was wrapped around his neck twice.

I'll have a scheduled c-section because of retinal detachments (seriously!). The doctor said it would put too much pressure on my eyes to bear down while pushing, which could cause re-detachment. Ew.

i developed a fever and then babys heart rate was close to 200.... but we still continued tryign to get him out naturally but baby's head was turned breech. dr was to manually turn it and use forceps to get him to turn but then i kept pushing and my fever/his heartrate kept spiking and it was determined also that he was to big for my pelvis (big baby!) and bc of all the other issues we had an emergency c section. im fine with it bc i know my dr was VERY VERY pro natural birth and we tried everything to get him out naturally but it just wasnt in the cards. After my c section is was confirmed that my baby would of never fit through my birth canel bc of how narrow i am.
@foodnerd81: i know it seems like everyone assumes u get a csection bc the dr was to impatient....drives me batty bc i have never heard of any stories in real life where that has happened!

Failed induction/augmentation... fetal distress through the contractions, found out later that it was recovering well between them though and a drop/rise is normal as baby starts to get into the birth canal.

This is weird, but I'm kind of glad to read that these were all real reasons. I read so many stories like, oh the OB just wanted to get home in time for the football game, or they needed the bed for someone else, or whatever, it's like the entire OB community just wants to do a C-section and move on. But from these stories, and people I know who had one, they were all necessary.

Induction due to elevated blood pressure, 2 plus days of labor, 3 plus hours of pushing- he was sunny side up. C-section. Really grieved for the natural birth I had hoped for, during my maternity leave I would cry watching all those 'A Baby Stories'. Much better now and when (if) we have a second, I may opt for a sched C-section,

Was going for natural but ended up with a C-section because: LOs heart rate was dropping with the big contractions, contractions were coming fast but I wasn't dilating--they tried Pitocin but then LO moved sideways and wouldn't budge so C-section.

Mine was elective. But I also had a whole bunch of issues at the end of my pregnancy that they would have suggested one for anyhow. Once I was opened up, they found the cord around her neck 3 times up near the placenta (would have prevented her from being able to descend) which explained my polyhydramnios.
