I voted failed induction at 39 weeks, medically necessary. However, I don't think that is the most accurate. I was induced due to very high bp at 38w5d and did not deliver until 39 weeks exactly. My induction was successful in that I made it to 10cm and pushed for two hours. Unfortunately, my baby was face up and was not responding to positions to turn him. He also had a 14.5 inch head, so it wouldn't fit that way. The stress of a two day induction with little sleep, plus two hours of pushing, was too much for my body and I ended up with eclampsia. The seizure did not take place until I was on the operating table with my spinal in place, so they got him out very quickly.

My water broke on it's own at 40w2d. I knew I was 4 cm dilated from my appointment two days earlier. My contractions never started and I ended up on pitocin until I was receiving the maximum dose. 17 hours into labor, I was 5 cm dilated and my body still wasn't contracting on it's own. We tried turning down the pitocin at some point to see if I could go on without it. I got the epidural at 8pm and was wheeled into the OR at 9.

I'm hoping for a vbac next time around!

I voted failed induction at 41 weeks and my induction was, according to my doctor, medically necessary. I had high blood pressure my whole pregnancy and was therefore at risk for preeclampsia. And up until the last week of my pregnancy, my BP was controlled with meds. My doc said we had to induce as the risks were higher the longer we waited. However my induction failed (I stopped progressing at 6.5cm) and it was 48 hours since water broke, I developed a fever and my BP was rising despite epidural - so I had the c section. I wish it had gone differently and will definitely try for a VBAC for my next one.

I had a placental abruption, so my OB didn't want to risk my or my baby's life by pushing (could lead to hemorrhaging). I was on hospital bed rest for 6 weeks prior to delivery. We had the c-section scheduled for 1/3, but my water broke on 1/1. No contractions. I was immediately prepped for the c-section at that time.

Mine was a combo of things not part if the poll. Failure to progress after 18+ hours, included pain meds. 26 hours after my water broke I was only able to get to 8.5cm and they said I likely wouldn't make it to 10cm. They also said I was showing signs of an infection because I had a fever.

@Phillybaby2013: Sorry....missed that you were disappointed with your birth experience too. I'm sorry you feel as if your doctor was just doing it so he could go home. My biggest fear was pushing for a few hours and then being told that I had to have a C-section as well.

@runsyellowlites: While I trust that my doctor was trying to do what was best for my baby, I do still feel disappointed. I know the C-section was necessary b/c he was stuck, but he was also stuck coming out through cesarean as well. He also had meconium in his lungs, so I'm glad they took him when they did...just disappointed that I couldn't have him naturally.

I chose medicated failure to progress, but there was also fetal distress. I labored for a bit more than 36 hours and had a cervical lip I couldn't push past. DS was very low for quite some time, and eventually showed signs of distress.

@pastemoo: @2PeasinaPod: @Phillybaby2013: I went into labor wanting a completely natural birth. I regret letting them keep me, and then augment me, and then accepting pain meds just to shut them up (the nurse would NOT let it go) b/c I know being stuck in bed feeling like a drunk person did not work with my body to progress. I fell for "dead baby" when my doctor said I hadn't progressed enough in the time I was there and that my baby was in fetal distress b/c his heartrate was dropping through contractions (far as I remember it was recovering well between them though). I absolutely hated it! I missed the first 3 hours of DS's life bc I was knocked out on morphine and then ended up dry heaving and vomited 2 days later from all the gas... Not to mention I felt the first part of the incision b/c I lied to not be put under. I'm just thankful I didn't have any long term complications like a friend of mine.

My first birth experience is 100% of the reason I opted for a hbac with P.

My water broke but it was a slow leak. There was meconium in the water (green). I wasn't dilated when I got to the hospital.

I still don't know if I should have gone to the hospital at that time or not. It had been a little leaky for 3 days, and then around 4am it started leaking more (but not 1 pad/hour) and smelled strongly of maple syrup. Went to the hospital at 5pm.

Was put on pitocin immediately with fetal monitor and contraction monitor (first external then internal) so was not able to walk.

Baby was sunny side up (they found out during the c-section). He had to be pulled back out.

I had been pushing for maybe 2-3 hours?

I was in the hospital for 27+ hours when I had a fever and baby was in fetal distress. We both were on 2 days of antibiotics. Mine were only supposed to be 24 hours but I kept spiking fevers in the recovery room.

Technically the reason for the c-section was fetal and maternal infection--but I voted for "fetal distress."

I still have a whole cloud of negative feelings around my c-section.

And I think looking above you need 2 more poll options:
maternal distress (from labor)
placenta previa (scheduled)

I chose fetal distress w/ medication, though I'm not sure that's totally accurate.

I progressed fine, and had an epidural at 6cm. Once I got to 10, pushed for 2 hours and he was caught on my pelvic bone. The doctor offered forceps, vacuum or a C-section. Since he was pretty sure he wouldn't get him out with the forceps or vacuum, I opted for the C-section. I had also spiked a fever. LO was born 16 hours after the start of my labor.

So ours was a combination of things. When I got my epidural progress stopped. We waited about 4 hours then my dr pushed pitocin. Started to push for about 5 hours and then LO was in distress, she pooped while I was trying to push her out and she was also stuck at the same time. She was in position but she was sideways from what my dr said.

Breech baby here, but I was secretly pleased I'd need a c-section because I am a big scardy cat and was very scared of labour. I had an awesome c-section experience, including skin to skin time in the OR and would totally do it again. However, A being breech led to some health problems for her, so can't really wish for another breech baby... next time I will probably have to suck up labour : )

I progressed from 4 to 10 in just an hour or two without pain meds or pitocin, I just couldnt push him out.

I picked failed induction - medically necessary at 40 even though I slightly disagree now whether or not it really was necessary. My BP was creeping up towards the end but never hypertensive/pre-e levels, no protein.

I have a lot of regret/disappointment with my birth story and wish I had fought/postponed the induction... Started with Cervadil overnight that pretty much did nothing than I labored, maxed out (@ 32!) on pit for almost 10 hours and never progressed past a 2. My Dr wouldn't give me an epi till I got to 4 but im pretty sure the house Doc intervened at the end and told him I was at 3 and to let me get it even tho I don't think that was true. Then they made me feel like we were going to wait a while so I could rest with the epi and see what happened. 45 min later my Dr came in, checked me (no progress) and said "Im taking the baby." Again i wish I had argued for more time considering no one was in distress but when you're in that situation it's hard to rationalize. 30 min later I was in the OR and yelled and cried and shook through the whole thing bc I felt so much pulling/scratching deep in my abdomen. It was awful. They gave me morphine and an extra bolus in the epi..... The only thing I didn't want my entire pregnancy was a C - section.

The kicker to all this was that my Dr. mistakingly scheduled me for a day he wasn't supposed to be working. He came in for me and I'm pretty sure wanted to be done when he decided to do the section. Baby was born at 10:20 PM.

This makes me so sad and I'm half tempted to punch the guy in the face when I go for my 6 week pp checkup.

@runsyellowlites: I understand. I just wanted to explain my situation because I feel that "scheduled" implies a sense of advanced planning and I definitely did not plan to have my baby that day. My one hour of advance notice barely gave me enough time to call my mom to arrive just as I was going to the operating room.

I didn't fall into any of the choices. I had pre-e at 34 weeks, no dilation, and I needed to have my baby sooner rather than later. I think my condition was such that they couldn't wait for an induction, but they didn't present it that way - no rushing around, they never labeled it as an "emergency c-section", but I think my pre-e was so bad that I needed to have the baby as soon as possible.

@runsyellowlites: She hadn't been transverse at all during my pregnancy, but I think 5 hours of laboring on my back on a triage table (I made the mistake of delivering at the hospital with the highest birth rate in New York State) because they had no labor rooms caused her to turn and then sort of get stuck.

I had twins with a connected placenta. My doctor said it was my choice and we could try but if we're her and her babies she would pick the c section to reduce the risk of baby B having no oxygen if something happened with the placenta when baby A was delivered. We had so many risks already with baby B and twin to twin transfusion that I didn't want any more possible risks so I took the c section.

@Mrs. Lemon-Lime: twins does not mean its automatically a c section. I think most doctors will give a woman the choice. Some choose c section some choose vaginal. As long as baby A is head down they can try. If baby B is breech they can turn it or try to deliver it. There are cases where baby a is delivered vaginally but baby has to be delivered with a c section if there are complications. I think it's that risk that make some moms pick c section from the start.

@runsyellowlites No, baby was totally fine - no fetal distress at all. But I spiked a fever 2x and they couldn't get it down. I was also creeping up on my water being broken for 24 hours.... haha, looks like I fit into a few of the scenarios above! Even with all that, I loved my birth experience and honestly loved my c-section recovery. Was pretty quick and mostly painless!

@ktdid23: Did your fever affect the baby's heartrate at all (usually it does). I would choose one of the fetal distress w/ or w/o pain meds/inducing meds

OR failure to progress since you didn't make progress in the hours of pushing you did.
