@gingerbebe: I agree with what you're saying. That's where I'm at, deciding whether this is a waste of money and if he would flourish elsewhere.. or are the expectations like that across the board? I don't take this decision lightly. Tomorrow I will be waking him up earlier to see if it then makes him tired by nap time tomorrow.

@lioneyes: that's the struggle... This is my first experience (which is why we picked one of the nicest places for more of a surity)! But I don't know if the grass is really greener? Will I just keep disrupting his routine and life? It's so hard

@peaches1038: that sounds so stressful! There are a lot of differences with his attempted sleep there and at home. This is my first daycare experience so I don't know what should be expected. Expecting a 2.5 year old to lay in his cot for 2 hours quietly is a general expectation?

I have a 3.5 year old and if I was in that situation, I would find a new daycare for my child. My kid went from being at home for 16 months, to being in an in-home daycare for 6 months before it abruptly closed, then 2-ish months of a newborn brother and patchworked care between me while on maternity leave and a part-time sitter, before starting full-day school at his current center. Was it a lot of change in a short period? Yes. But I'd rather make the transition and find him a better fit than keep him in a situation that is not stimulating, challenging, and stagnant for comfort's sake. Plus, I'd see it as a waste of money.

We had DS in a playschool last year (young 2's, started when he was 23 months) and he was NOT. HAPPY. Hard drop offs, very clingy, only enjoyed snack time. By the end of the year he was playing more but it was not great. They were also disorganized which I didn't love. We moved over the summer and started him at a different Playschool (older 2's, started at 35 months) and it's been night and day. His teacher is super involved, he loves her and the assistants, she is extremely communicative, everyone (including older classes teachers) knows him by name, and he actually engages in the activities. And they are organized! I think part of the issue was his age/maturity last year but part of it was, none of us loved the school. We really only switched cause we moved but had I known how it COULD be I might have put him in his current school earlier and just dealt with the commute.

I pulled my son from a preschool at age 3 because he was having major behavioral issues they were not equipped to handle and therefore kept sending him home. It’s debatable whether they were in the right or not but the teacher we were having issues with quit shortly after we left so clearly she did not love her job. Funny enough I’m planning on sending him back there this summer for camp because it’s a very relaxed environment and his old friends will be there!

DS has been in daycare since he was 13 weeks old and he is now 27 months. We moved cross country in August and started him at a new daycare center. He cried every single morning at home, in the car and at drop off saying “no school mama! No go mama” he would literally cling to me as I tried to leave and would sob as I walked away. He never cried at his old school and I thought maybe he was just adjusting. Then one day about 3 weeks after he started, I asked him what his name was and he replied H, sit down! In a really harsh tone. We don’t say “sit down”, we say “on your bottom”, so I knew that he got it from school. I pulled him that week and put him in an in-home daycare. He literally has never cried again and he gets excited about going to “school”. I also didn’t like that they kept the lights on for nap and also made them keep their shoes on for nap among other small things that I could’ve overlooked if it was the right fit. Ugh I’m so glad we switched. Go with your gut mama!

@Reese: I don't know how it works where you are, but it sounds like they need an assistant to do that kind of work so that the teachers can focus on the kids. And I can relate to wanting to hang on to the language aspect. When we moved, we gave up one language that my DD was completely fluent in (which was her 3rd language) and she's now learning her 4th language, but it's less intensive since it's just one hour a day instead of 100%. I think you should have a sit down meeting with them about your expectations of the school vs. reality and if they can't satisfy that, I would look elsewhere.

@lamariniere: the two teachers are together when all of the kids are together but sometimes one of them is busy/accepting catering/getting snack ready etc etc.. so I’m sure they find it easier being together. The class can be 8-1 I think? Or 6-1? It was 3-1 but now it’s only him and another preschooler + 5 toddlers. Sigh. I’m so afraid of another adjustment for DS and I really wanted this place to work as it’s bilingual french and he’s been picking up so much French.. I think I will softly hint/bring up him going in the preschool room.. while looking elsewhere

@Mae: oh my gahhhd I could have written this to an extent!! I guess because this is our first daycare experience part of me wonders if my expectations are really high and this is just how it is (especially since this was the most expensive place we saw) I feel like my LO is “blamed” for things that are beyond his control and his teacher doesn’t really take accountability. “He was moving around and not staying in his cot so he had a blow out, he must have held his pee and then peed out of his diaper” ..She also seems to always be in discipline mode/voice with the kids. Today in the room all the kids were running and playing with their balloons but she called out DS to stop because all the other kids were copying him and learning from him ( I guess because he’s the oldest but wtf??) I don’t know what is pregnancy hormones, mama bear or actually crazy..

@Reese: how many preschoolers are they supposed to be able to accommodate? And does he still have the same preschool teacher when he’s with the younger kids? It kind of sounds like a bad fit to me. I would probably start looking for something else. Like @Mae: said, you could find a different place and feel like it’s a much better fit. Now that we’ve moved and my daughter is in a new preschool, the difference is like night and day. It’s also a different philosophy and it has a public education aspect (as opposed to the totally private place we had before). The teacher is a complete professional and we are very happy and my DD is thriving/learning.

We pulled our 3 year old out of her daycare last summer. She'd been there 1.5 years. We'd had some issues throughout our time there, like constant changes in staffing and lack of communication-- but it was our first daycare experience so I thought that was just "how daycare is." We were a bit frustrated after the first 6 months, but then we were in a classroom with 2 stable teachers we LOVED and everything seemed great. Then when she aged out of that class, it was a disaster. We didn't get along with the teachers. The primary teacher was very cold with the kids, and the helper teacher kept changing. We had a ton of communication issues where they basically couldn't tell me what was going on during the day, and weren't doing what we asked in relation to potty training. We also discovered they were using time outs and lying to us about it (I'm not even really opposed to time outs, but I'm very opposed to them lying about it). They just did not seem to give a shit about my kid. It felt like they thought if they kept her breathing all day, that was sufficient. We moved her to another daycare center and it is COMPLETELY different. Two stable, caring teachers. Great communication. They're actually teaching her things. I'm so glad we moved.

@lamariniere: Me too. It seems the justification is that DS would be lonely with the only other age appropriate child. More socialization if they are all together.. etc etc. I prefer more structure as well. I think that’s what bothers me the most.. it’s hard not to think of it as them just sort of playing in the room all day/some songs and stories” which might be good for the younger kids but not for preschool aged kids! When he started they were upstairs often and doing experiments etc now it seems that’s not really the case ..

@Reese: I don’t understand why they are combining the classes so much. Is there a staffing issue? Have you asked what is going on? At our old center, they would combine kids in the last hour or so of the day after kids started going home, but not for the majority of the day. It sounds like there isn’t a ton of structure. I personally prefer a more structured program.

@lamariniere: LO is 31 months (2.5ish) . He has been there since November. It was an adjustment to start... and then it got better and he WAS napping... but he was also going upstairs into the preschool room/I feel like he was definitely being stimulated and engaged more. They were doing experiments, crafts and going outside. The last 2 weeks its been inside and with younger kids all day. in their play area/their toys. I would really hate to pull him and start him somewhere else and create such a huge disruption for him since we have LO2 on the way in a few weeks and he loves his little friends there but I feel like he isn't thriving and his teacher seems frustrated... which is driving ME crazy.

@crazydoglady: I am also due with LO2 in a few weeks... so the stress of finding a new place isn't on me (especially since waiting lists can be crazy here). I am more worried about the adjustment for DS. With a new sibling on the way + a change in care.... it worries me. I would probably take the non confrontational route and say Ive decided to keep him home with me on mat leave.

Thank you for the condolences ... it was truly devastating.. she was an incredible woman

How old is your LO and how long has he been at this place?

Before we moved to our current location, we had a daycare that had been completely fine until about this time last year. Things went downhill really fast with one of the students and then there were a number of staffing issues and management handled the situation very poorly and started lying about things, which I called them out on. I also told them flat out that we were unhappy and looking for a new solution. I happened to find a place, but then we found out we were moving anyway, so we just rode it out for the last 6 weeks we were there.

@Reese: I'm so sorry to hear about the passing of your nanny. That's absolutely devastating. I had a strained relationship with our old daycare provider (she was really passive aggressive,) so I decided to not tell her we were looking or really give her an opportunity to "fix things." I knew nothing could fix it permanently, so I just told her once we had already put our deposit on the new place. She was upset that I gave her no warning, but I just didn't address it.

@crazydoglady: Our nanny suddenly passed away in November so the adjustment to preschool was already HUGE. I initially loved the idea that it was small to start as he would get so much 1 to 1 attention.... now that's not really working and I think he is grossly under stimulated with the younger kids. He basically just isnt napping and is HIGH sleep needs.. so when he doesn't sleep he gets wired/over tired. I hate picking him up and she tells me how he didn't sleep/wasn't listening/was "bad" ..even though she acknowledges its because he's not napping (when he was or when he does he's totally fine). You're right.. I need to just trust my gut. I don't want to be confrontational with her because I know it wont help if we keep him there but I have started looking elsewhere.

I pulled my son from the place he had been at since 6 months old because he was exhibiting behavioral issues that I just don't think they were equipped to deal with. Nothing major, like throwing toys and hitting. I also felt like he wasn't being stimulated enough and wanted him to be in a more educational environment. There were other reasons as well. It was a very hard decision because he had been there for so long and they truly loved him and he had to continue to do for 30 more days after notice which was awkward. We made the switch early December and I have NO regrets. He still has days when he throws things but they understand so much of it is developmental. My advice is to go with your gut. Mama intuition is a wonderful gift. If it isn't working, it just isn't working.

DS is in a newly opened preschool and his class size is very small. They anticipated it growing faster than it has and daily he is mixed with the younger kids. He hasn’t been napping there and is displaying behavior we don’t see at home. I feel he is under stimulated as he doesn’t have peers his own age. This place is not cheap... and today was a rough day... I’m also pregnant and hormonal... so I’m not sure what’s reasonable (I hope this is clear)

To be clear his preschool class is supposed to be him and 2 others ... one is away and the other is a year older than him. Which means him and the 3.5 year old are in the toddler area daily ...
