If you don't have strong opinions on medication, vaccines, homeopathy, etc, it probably doesn't matter. I do, and I know that many pediatricians are not on the same page as I am.

I had a severe adverse reaction to a vaccine as well as another medication. Some pediatricians will not hear of delaying and spacing out vaccines, to the point of not treating an unrelated illness should you refuse to follow the prescribed schedule. It would be grossly irresponsible of me to approach the vaccine and medication issues casually, in the event that my kids have my degree of susceptibility, and it would be grossly irresponsible of me to use a pediatrician who does not understand and work with my concerns. So I will have to research the crap out of local pediatricians whenever I get pregnant.

I wondered this as well. I didn't know that it was something that people did until recently. I just thought I would find one close to home that takes my insurance.

@mediagirl: I did but only because it seems like that is what everyone else does! Now I am in the process of switching and I am doing interviews again. I did find one that I definitely do not want so I guess it has been worth it ....

i think we did it bc we'd heard the pediatrician would come to the hospital when the baby was born and then we'd be taking the baby in a few days after getting released so we needed to decide on someone in advance. our ped ended up not being affiliated with our hospital tho so while we were there the baby was seen by the on-site pediatrician. probably not completely necessary to do the pre-interview but i'm glad we did b/c i was too frazzled and tired post-partum to think about such things.

i was worried about the interviews because everyone says we should interview. but honestly, i'm happy with 1. going with whoever takes my insurance. 2. on recommendation from friends, family and other doctors. i'd rather just pick one that sounds good. and if it's not a right fit, switch over? too much trouble to interview. but i guess when we're switching from one to another a few times, it's time to buckle down and interview haha.

For me it was because 1) I'm over cautious with my child and a lot more lax with myself, 2) I wanted to make sure my preferences and views on medicine aligned with my doctor's (different doctors are more aggressive using medicines and others are open to homeopathic remedies, etc), and 3) one office environment and staff is not the same as compared to another and I wanted to see how they would interact with myself and my child. Responses to middle of the night needs, separation of sick and well child waiting rooms, rapport with the front office staff, nurses, and doctors, will the pedi support me in my preferred parenting choices or will he/she always be pushing for something different, etc. were all concerns I had and wanted to determine before selecting our pediatrician.

I just realized that I am not sure exactly why there is such a process for interviewing pediatricians. I don't interview any doctors that I go to myself beforehand. Is it because we go to see pediatricians so often and the relationship can last for many many years? Is it because we need to know that they can respond right away in case of emergencies?
