Huh-- these answers are so interesting. I really always thought it was mostly environmental and cost, but the health factor never really occurred to me. Thanks for all the feedback!

I'm with @Minnie_Girl, #1 is chemicals, followed by environmental benefits, better function, less gross trash in my house, cost-savings and they're cuter. Basically I can't think of a single reason I'd want to use disposables.

Cost, better for the environment, function, and looks. We have less blow outs in cloth and have to change her less because of some of the diaper's stay dry material. Plus they are so darn cute! In disposables, we would get crazy blow outs and have to change her whole outfit... IMO, If you can handle blow outs, then you can handle poopy cloth diapers!

@artbee: I have the BumGenius AIO, and my LO had a horrible rash around 6 months. I made sure he was wearing a liner in between, and the rash still wouldn't go away. As soon as I stripped his diapers, all was better. I will strip them about once a month just in case of detergent build up. It's a simple process and doesn't take much longer than a regular load.

Other - baby's health. I'd use cloth for no other reason than the toxicity of disposables, even if cloth didn't have those other nice benefits (cost, environment, etc.). Anything that is so toxic it could potentially give my child a chemical burn will certainly not be pressed against their genitals for the first two years of their life!

For me it was cost above all.

Fwiw, poop should be dumped into the toilet, even with disposables, so there is no added ick factor with cloth for me.

@Mrs. Superhero: @Navy_Mommy: SAME. Once I learned about all the chemicals used in disposable diapers, I knew I either had to buy unbleached, organic, chlorine-free diapers which are twice the price of regular disposables - or cloth diaper. Cost was a big factor as well. but now it's all about my baby's well-being.

The rest are just perks; environment and cuteness.

Looks - They are just so cute!!! It also has worked much better for us. Side bonus for us was that with the cloth at daycare I got to examine his bowel movements. With his food issues that was terribly important. And rinsing the poop off keeps the smell out of the house.

We use cloth diapers on our son. They are cute, much cheaper, and really are pretty easy.

We use one size diapers and they are simple. They go on as easily as a disposable, and once they are dirty, we put them in the laundry bin. We do diaper laundry every 3-4 days.

I decided to use cloth because of all the chemicals and junk in disposables. I convinced my husband based on the overall savings. My love for cloth diapers has turned into a little bit of an obsession so I don't think we have saved much. I also love the thought of knowing that I'm contributing a little less to the wasteland.

My main reason was that I think its better for her tushy. My mom always told me she didn't want plastic on my tushy, so that got into my head. All the other stuff are perks.

That being said, lo has some awful diaper rash even though she's in cloth. It started when she started teething. It pisses me off.... but I also feel it would be worse if she weren't in the cloth.

I was also worried about them being hard to do, but I use bum genius all in one one size. Its pretty much just like using a disposable but instead of throwing them out you put them in the laundry bin.

We chose cloth for a lot of reasons listed above, but I was first drawn to them because we have 2 dogs, one of which, I'm embarrassed to say, likes to eat poop. I read that several dogs have died from ingesting the chemicals in disposable diapers, so I started researching cloth. Once we stated using cloth, I was hooked. They are more work, but for us, the benefits outweigh the extra effort.

@Mrs. Superhero: "fear of the weird things in disposables rubbing up on my baby's girly bits..."

Change girly bits to boy bits and you've described my number one reason. Disposables can hold like 10 times their weight in liquid because of chemical additives, cloth holds so much liquid because they use naturally absorbent fibers!

Plus cost savings, better for the environment, cute factor, function...the list goes on and on!

Our main reason was cost & I loved the look!

We started cloth diapering DD as soon as we got home from the hospital & it really wasnt that bad, even with only having a days worth & having to wash daily. Almost immediately we had to take a 5 week break bc DD got a yeast rash from the antibiotics she had at the hospital. I can't tell you how glad I am to be back in cloth!!!!!

I think they're WAY more convenient, even with DD poo'ing with every feeding, you never "run out", & I just couldn't stand throwing money in the trash... Literally!

DH's biggest motivation for cloth is the long term savings. That's mostly my motivation, with a little bit of just liking the idea of helping the environment. However, we used disposables for the first month, and will probably still use them for nighttime, and when she's in someone else's care (unless they would like to use the cloth).

I use gdiapers and mostly use the flushable inserts and some gcloths. We did disposables for the first month or so while we were adjusting to life with a newborn and they were so easy I was scared to switch but once I did I loved using gdiapers.

In additional to being better for the enrionment it is just more convenient for me to use gdiapers...I hated having to take the trash bag of disposables out so frequently...I love just being able to flush each diaper or wash the cloths every few days.

LO didn't have any sensitivity to disposables but I just heard ts better for their skin. Both me and hubby have super sensitive skin so this was a concern for me.

Also gdiapers work so much better...absorb more of the big poo and pee. My LO sleeps 12-13 hours at night without waking so her diaper is very full in the morning and gdiapers just worked better.

Finally I heard that babies that use cloth potty train faster. I just read that on a few sites/blogs and haven't researched it much but that really appeals to me. I kind of don't want to have baby #2 until LO is close to being potty trained.
