My main reason is to reduce our impact on the environment, which is a huge driver in nearly every decision I make.

The enormous cost savings are the #2 reason.

Reduced chemical exposure is #3. I received a bunch of disposable diapers from my baby shower and the fragrance knocked me back, it was so artificial and strong. I like that we only use disposables occasionally.

Bonus reason #4 I had not considered before we started: CDs contain poop much better than disposables. Blowouts are not a part of our lives.

We did it mainly for environmental reasons. Saving THOUSANDS of dollars didn't hurt either! It ended up being super easy, and I really liked seeing her cloth diapered booty.

I did it to reduce landfill waste. I wasn't sure I would like it/be able to deal with it so I got a service, so it definitely wasn't cheaper for us, but I still felt good about how many diapers I wasn't throwing out. Each bundle of 10 came in an elastic band and I saved them all and made a rubber band ball, and seeing how many rubber bands there were blows my mind. I only was able to do it for a year, unfortunately, because the daycare we chose wouldn't use them.

Environmental for sure. We live in the PNW and recycle & compost everything we can.

@littlejoy was a great example. Without her I doubt DH would have been on board. But when we babysat for A he was amazed how easy they were.

My main reason is environmental, becauseI hate making rubbish. Cost is second. I think people fail to realise how much water and power is used in production processes of items like disposable diapers, when they try to argue that washing cloth makes it environmentally equal or worse than disposable. Also, consider the transport miles for every packet of disposables from the factory and how much fuel is needed.
I'm not totally against disposables, we use them at night and when out, but I figure if I'm using cloth for even 75% of the time that's a greatly reduced environmental impact.

#1 is money hands down. We even use them traveling although I'm not die-hard enough to use cloth wipes too.
#2 is smell. I actually can't stand the smell of traditional disposable diapers. I can't quite explain it but I can tell when friends babies are wearing disposables cause I can smell them! I'll take ammonia mornings over that all day.

A lot of it is the money and environment for me. But part of it is that my mom used CDs, and since she died a few years ago, I see it partly as a way to connect with her. I also like thinking that she'd be happy/proud that I was doing the same as her. I don't know anyone else who does it irl.

I think there are some comparisons that say yes you use water to wash but if you factor in the cardboard and plastic to package the diapers and the gas to ship them and the manufacturing wastes it still comes out ahead.

Because they're so stinkin' cute! That's pretty much what go me interested. Saving money is nice (in the long run, hopefully - I'm pretty addicted to buying new cute designs), and I'm hoping it will help make potty training easier, but that wasn't really a deciding factor.

1. Cost. It's been awesome to not have to spend money on disposables, or go out and buy them. It's easier to justify the upfront cost of cloth because we plan on having another baby. We use disposables as a back up and for travel, it's just not my preference.

2. Less chemicals. My skin is ridiculously sensitive and it seems that my daughter's is as well. I love that I can have a bit more control over what's right up against her skin. Plus, less rashes.

3. Environmental. Less trash in landfills is always a plus. I'm another pacific northwesterner, and we recycle and compost, so it just makes sense to reduce our diaper waste as well.

4. They're just plain cute. I spend a lot of time changing diapers, I may as well like how they look.

Also, I think another environmental consideration is the resources it takes to make the diapers. I would imagine it's pretty harmful the environment to make disposable diapers--paper, water, bleach, etc.

Another PNW-er here. #1 is money for us. #2 is the lack of chemicals going against LOs skin and #3 is trash reduction. We are in Portland and have a very small trash bin that gets picked up every other week so we have to be super mindful of what goes in there!

For us it is a tie between saving money and the environment. I cringe to think about how much trash is made when you exclusively use disposable diapers (which we have when our LO has a rash or we are on a vacation). We are in NYC and are the only ones in our social circle who cloth diaper, so it definitely isn't the norm over here. I wish people were more Eco conscious like it is in the PNW!

Also it seems a lot comfier for LO, but I suppose I'll never know!

There are a bunch of reasons why people cloth diaper.

Save money, potty train faster, more natural than disposable, etc.

What are your reasons? What reasons are not so important.

For me, I cloth because I wanted to save money, back when money was tight. But money isn't the main reason anymore. Though, I like getting a good deal and I know CDing will save us money in the long run. I think the thought of my kids and I putting disposables into landfills (and it being there for 150 years or so) is probably my main reason now. Sounds funny or maybe dumb but the movie Wall-e has impacted me. Plus, living in Seattle, we compost and our trash can is small while our recycling and compost bins that get picked up are big and cost us nothing. So reducing our trash is kinda always in my mind, either at work or home. I'm not against disposables. I do have a stash for emergencies and back up.
I haven't heard people question CDing to my face but DH has heard questions from his family and friends. About how CDing might use more water and power to wash, so CDing is not really better than disposables... In terms of what energy resources we use. I feel like I have to tell the naysayers that I'm not trying to save the world here. I know I'm not. I also, don't look down on people or judge people who use disposables full time.
