there are many reasons, but i think for celebrities, opportunity is one of the big reasons. they are away from their so's for long periods of time, people are constantly hitting on them.

in the case of kstewart, she is young and inexperienced.

too bad..... rob really seems like a really nice guy.

I think people cheat because they are bored and like the thrill of something new.

Like pp said, I think most people cheat bc they are like addicts and love the thrill of the chase and the excitement from a new relationship...it's physically and emotionally different being with someone new. In the beginning everyone can appear to b perfect and interesting and exciting. This combined with selfishness, insecurity and maybe boredom with their existing relationship.

Then I hear about people who are married and then meet their "soulmate"...if that's the case, then you should be mature enough to not cheat, get a divorce first, let some time pass and then go be with your "soulmate"..

I can't judge though bc I "dated" a guy who was in a relationship...their relationship ended...i dated other guys but we became friends...time passed...and now we are happily married.

@hilsy85: I agree. I believe that cheating can be a mistake and not someones character.

I agree with HILSY85 about the adrenaline of "the chase"/something forbidden. Some people love the idea to be constantly reminded that they "still got it". It's sad.

@mrsjyw: Sorry to hear about your friend. Blah.

I don't think there's any one reason or logic. I think it's disgusting and unnecessary overall. But, I've done it to an ex. So I can't judge.

Ironic that you posted about this, because one of my dear friends (out of state) just called me again this morning about her dh's affair last year, that seems to have resurfaced... :*( heart breaks for her.

I think there are lots of reasons...sometimes it's that they're unhappy in the relationship and looking for an excuse to get out of it, sometimes it's that they crave that excitement and thrill of "the chase"/doing something forbidden, sometimes maybe it's a response to feeling stressed or anxious over where the relationship is going/not going, sometimes I think it's just a lack of respect for the other person and what commitment means. And I know some people will disagree with this, but I honestly think that sometimes cheating is a one time thing that is not necessarily indicative of a deeper issue and can sometimes truly just be a mistake.

I was totally going to start a thread about this! I'm so sick of hearing people cheating! And with a married man! And shame on him, too.

Cheating sucks, man.

I think there are a variety of possible reasons, but ultimately I think that the cheater feels like their needs aren't being met (physically, emotionally, spiritually) and they need something to fulfill them. There's also the additional caveat of being an addict (drug addict, alcoholic, sex addict) that could be at play as well, and encouraging them to behave in ways they otherwise wouldn't, because of their addiction.

I'm still a little bummed about KStew and RPat.. -.-
As much as I liked them together and am worried about the final installment of Twilight, I hope he doesn't take her back.

I think people cheat when they're unhappy in the relationship and too chicken/lame/immature to end things. But who knows..
