I think people just assume that all babies should be fat and bouncy as sign of good health.
My baby was 6lbs 9oz & 20 inchs at birth which is smaller than we thought she would be and she has had periods of struggling with gaining weight but in the end she is doing great now. my parents still think I dont feed her enough but her doctor is happy with her weight and she is about 40-50 percentile so I'm ok

My son was on the 99th percentile for weight and height and people used to make comments like "Man you have a huge baby!" or "What are you feeding him?" I just ignored them. I figure if he's growing proportionally, he's fine. If he was 99th for weight and then all of a sudden 25th for height, I might be a little concerned. So I use these percentiles are just general guidelines. Nothing more nothing less.

@zippylef: Yeah, you just can't win. My tiny 16 month old just started walking, so people constantly assume that she's still a baby, and it really pisses me off.

I remember once when DS was 4 months old we were at walgreens and someone asked his age, when I said 4 months they said, "oh wow... he is so small. Does you feed him enough?"
ummm.... wow!!! I just said my doctor has no concern and he's healthy, so I'm not worried!

He is 6th percentile for weight at 10.5 months. He doesn't look like he's going to turn one in a month. He still looks like a baby... but I think I secretly revel in it - I like having a small baby - he's easier to cuddle and carry. He also fits into his clothes longer ;)

I was worried about it initially but I choose not to care anymore.

It's funny that so many pp's bring up the bigger=healthier=wealthier stigma... because it sure doesn't stay that way once they're kids and adults. Then it's whoever is the fittest/prettiest!

I've never understood it either. I'm 5 feet tall. My baby is average for height but a tiny little slip of a thing, and I wouldn't have expected anything else. She eats pretty well, and breastfeeds a ton, so I know she's how she's meant to be. I never quite understand why people feel insecure about their small children - do they feel like they've done something wrong?

My husband’s co-worker has an 8 month old baby boy who wears 24 month clothes. He’s HUGE! People give her crap all the time about “why isn’t your toddler walking yet?” and she has to explain how he doesn’t walk because he is still a little baby, not a toddler!! So – judgy peeps are going to judge either way you go.

When I was a baby, I was always less than 5% for weight until about 6 months when I fell off the growth chart completely. I’ve never had any health issues or anything; just small.

@Rainbow Sprinkles: I think you are right. People would probably make less comments if it was a little girl as opposed to a little boy.

My best friend has a little boy that is the same age as my LO and he's HUGE (90th percentile for height and weight) and I feel like our friends compare the two boys, and assume her LO is healthier because he is bigger, which really isn't true.

I have the opposite issue. Lo has always been in the 90-95th percentile and I always worry that shell be overweight. She was such a chunk as a baby! She's still a high percentile but she has thinned out as a toddler so I no longer worry. But seriously, I used to ask if I should put lo on a diet at her Dr apts.

I don't have an issue with having a smaller baby and am generally not insecure about it.

However, I find it interesting that people feel they need to comment on it every single time we go out. I get like ten comments a day. "She is so tiny!" "She is so petite!" I wonder that if she was a big baby, if people would comment "omg she is so big!" "You're baby girl is huge!"
It is strange to me that strangers are so concerned about her size.

I agree that you can't ever win...!! I guess I have really fattening breastmilk because both of my kids have been HUGE 99th percentile weight infants. I got the "what are you feeding him??" and "stop overfeeding your baby" comments all the time. But honestly once kids start walking, they all even out... between 18 months and 1 year Wagon Jr. didn't gain any weight, so the pediatrician actually asked me to get him to gain weight just to make sure he COULD gain weight and nothing was going on. I was sneaking butter and cheese into his food for a YEAR and he gained one pound, I think?? Now he's 3 and still fits into his 2T clothes (been wearing the same size for more than a year and JUST now is starting to grow out of his clothes) and I get the "he's so skinny" comments. Gah!!

The one big benefit I see to "bigger" kids is that when they're sick and don't eat anything for a day or two, a drop in weight is NOT a bad thing ;) so that's just one less thing to worry about.

I have 50% of passerby say "my what a tiiiiny little guy!" & the other half say "whoh, what a big boy!" When I tell them his age (3m).
So, it's all crap. He's between 45-55% (according to an online chart...we haven't been to ped's office for weeks now).
He's totally average but I get comments all the time. They are inconsistent & I ignore them.
Is be seriously surprised if your son was any bigger since you say both you & DH are small. He is your son, duh? Not sure what people expect.

@littlek: My LO is now outgrowing the 3-6 month clothes at almost 5 months. For him, it's mainly in the arms. His arms just grow so fast. All of his onesies look like three quarter sleeves, so I say that he looks "French." I'm close to buying 9 month cotton sleepers because his 6 month ones are beginning to look "French" as well.

@winniebee: I wish I knew. My husband and I are tall, but not big. LO was born at 7lbs 6 oz. He's at about 15lbs right now at almost 5 months. He measures and weighs right in the middle of the pack. His head actually measured small at his last well visit, then this week he's outgrowing a knitted hat, so I'm making a bigger one.

We noted the other day that he seemed chunky in the morning and then long at night during his daycare pickup. What's crazy is that he's bigger than older babies in his daycare. It's all breastmilk. Babies grow weird, that's my best guess.

I've got comments like "you should supplement so she can get bigger", well DH and I are both very small people, there is no way she is going to be "big". My pediatrician said she is doing great so I try and ignore everyone else. Babies will be all over the charts and that's normal.

I had a lot of people worrying about one of my twins. I have identical boys but they had twin to twin transfer while. Was pregnant. They were both born at healthy weights (6 lbs 8 oz, and 5 lbs 12oz) but the smaller one was nearly a pound lighter than his brother. Even still at three and a half people make comments about how skinny he is. When we talked to our pediatrician at each check up she said, oh sure he's smaller but he may always be a little smaller. Even though they are identical twins they have lived a different life since they split and the smaller twin may have developed a different metabolism. So as he grew he always stayed in the 10-20% while his brother was in 50-60%. As long as they are gaining and growing a small baby is just fine. I feel bad for my other twin because if his brother is the "skinny twin" what does that make him?

I bought all these 3 - 6 month clothes because B stayed in 0 - 3 month clothes for so long and he's already outgrown the 3 - 6, so I'm having to get 6 - 12. He's got some long legs and all of his 3 - 6 month clothes are highwaters... sexy!! ;) Off subject, the new spring collection at J&J is too cute!!

@littlek: Yea, I seriously almost screamed in the office last visit because while P had doubled her weight, she was still in the 1-2%. The nurse & pedi just kept repeating the % & I kept repeating she had doubled her birth weight, which she'd done even more since you're supposed to weigh from their lowest weight & not what they're literally born at. Ugh! She didn't have good initial gain in her first 2 months because of numerous issues, it was consistent but not that initial spike, and has since gained about a lb a month. I want to switch so bad but our pedi is one of the most supportive of breastfeeding & other parenting choices we've made in our area. I just take what he says with a grain of salt & try to not let it get to me...... From now on I'm going WITH literature so maybe I won't feel like screaming during the appt! Lol.

@littlek: I was definitely more concerned when it seemed like my son was a finicky eater (up until 4ish months) but he just had a dairy intolerance. He drinks 25 oz a day plus at least 5 oz of puree and then random finger foods. How big is Brennan these days? I was excited when Tyler moved up in Janie & Jack size (now in 6-12, even though it's a little big!) - my mom had bought him all of this amazing winter stuff in 6-12 long before he was born and I didn't think he'd ever get to wear it!

@Anagram: HAHA fried chicken in a blender!

@zippylef: Yeah, I do think people give moms crap constantly and you really can't win.

@runsyellowlites: our pediatrician is super laid back, fortunately, and has never been concerned about his size. good luck today!!

I just got crap about C from the lady at WIC the other day. She's 9.5 months old, 23lbs and 30" tall. She gave me a lecture about how I need to make sure that she doesn't grow too heavy because he bones wont be able to handle it.

Um... excuse me? It's not like i feed her cookies all day. She eats mostly formula still, she easts LESS than normal (because thats all she'll eat) and what table food she does eat is generally pretty healthy. She's not even a "chunky" baby. She's tall and she's solidly built and very strong. She's doesn't even have rolls. DH and I are both fairly tall also though, so it was inevitable. I CONSTANTLY get "Oh, she looks so much older!" "Oh, what a big girl!"

My point... I think people give moms crap no matter what. Someone is always going to have something to say. As long as your child is growing and on their own curve, there is no problem.

@runsyellowlites: Seriously? My pediatrician has never said anything about my LO and we started off the grid and then crawled on slowly and are now at 5th percentile for weight. Is your LO constantly at the same percentile? Because if so, I don't get the problem. As long as your LO is healthy and putting on weight, I don't see the issue.

I don't think bigger is necessarily better but with bigger babies you don't ever have to be concerned about whether they're growing/gaining enough. So like others have said, people tend to equate bigger babies with healthier babies. I also think people just love baby chubs!

I totally understand where you're coming from! P is on the smaller side and I get comments all the time from people asking things like "was she a premie" or them assuming that she's much younger with a "oh wow she's so tiny". Generally strangers don't bother me & I just joyous say, "yep, she's petite" & move along. Her pedi is another story though & we butt heads constantly because he says she needs to be higher on the % despite her being on track developmentally, having had outside factors that affected her weight gain in the beginning (tongue tie & still a number of protein intolerances), & me having been a petite baby myself. We actually have her 9 month appt today & I'm going armed with literature on normal growth patterns so MAYBE he'll lay off. (Switching pedis isn't an option for us in our area). Ultimately we just have to go with our mommy instinct & get confident in our lo being just fine being "small" & screw the rest!
