It must be the baby witching hour during the night! My 5 month old wakes up around then every night. Sometimes he will soothe himself back to sleep and sometimes he wants to eat. He's given me a few nights here and there lately of not stirring until 6 a.m., so maybe there is light at the end of the tunnel for us :)

My 2 month old does this, sometimes a couple times a night. Sometimes he goes back to sleep, other times he's up to nurse. It's always gas for us, 'cause I hear him toot. :p Same writhing and light fussing that eventually turns in to full out crying.

At 6.5 months were stil dealing with 4:00-4:30 wakeups. I usually get her and bring her in bed with me where she'll typically (after awhile...) fall back asleep for another hour or so. It's soooo early though!

@debbiei8: I didn't know about the grunts during that wonder week - interesting!

@Bookish: Isn't it funny how on time they are about it? haha

L does this too (9 weeks)! I'm kinda at a loss at what to do about this because it is super difficult to sleep through!

I leave him though and a lot of times he falls back asleep. He cries if he's hungry and we need to get up. I realized he's still sleeping while doing all this tossing and grunting. I guess it could be gas? But I'm wondering if it is just a developmental thing...he's in the middle of his second wonder week and effort grunts are one of the abilities they learn with his leap. I'm not sure if that's it, but it just started within the past week or so...right in the middle of the leap!

G actually still does this at 11 months! Right around 4 am every night, she starts whining and making noises, but 99% of the time, she goes right back to sleep, and so do I!

M does this. I've learned not to bother getting him until he's actually crying. Usually he just passes gas and goes back to sleep.

I have read that babies go through a light sleep cycle at around 4am and that is why a lot of them will wake up at that time, especially if they haven't learned how to put themselves back to sleep. At 7.5 weeks, I don't think there is much you can do except to wait to see if she will go back to sleep by herself. If not then you can feed her or try to soothe her in other ways.

my LO often does this because she's ready to poop. sometimes she got it out and went back down, sometimes she gave up and just passed back out, and sometimes it woke up outright, but it was usually around that same time every morning. I honestly don't have any advice though, because you can't really do anything about that! sometimes when she was in the bassinet, i got her up and brought her to bed so she could stretch out more, but if she's sleeping through it i'd leave her! even though she poops frequently, she sure makes it seem like an olympic sport sometimes :)

LO is 7.5 weeks and sleeps in a bassinet in our room. Every night around 4:30am she starts tossing and turning with her eyes closed, making LOUD grunts and other sounds. She does this for about a minute and then gets quiet for 20 seconds, then starts up again. I used to pick her up because I assumed it was her getting ready to wake up wailing, but after watching her I've realized that she would do this for quite a while if I let her, and it takes a bit for her to actually start crying and wake herself. I try to soothe her by putting my hand on her or picking her up and rocking/bouncing her, but she starts back up shortly after I lay her down. It's so loud I can't sleep so I usually just wake her up and feed. After that she'll go back to sleep for a bit, but is usually pretty fussy until we get up for the day around 7:00am.

Is this just part of the whole 'babies being loud sleepers' thing or could it be something else? I was thinking possibly gas since she can be a bit gassy and spits up quite a bit (especially in the AM). Dreams? Something else?
