@newlypregnantlady: Your A1C tells you in general how your blood sugar has been over the last three months. Fasting or having several hours between meals that day would have no effect on it.

They tested my A1c as part of my general prenatal labs that I got done in my first trimester. They never told me that they were going to test it, I just noticed it on the test results. The lab did ask if I had been fasting and I hadn't. But they also had a bunch of trouble with several blood draws from kids going before me, so I waited in the lab for like two hours before they took my blood. That's probably the only reason it was as low as it was.

Because of my family history of diabetes I skipped the 1hr test and went right to the 3hr during my first pregnancy.

I guess the reason why I would suggest doing the fasting test is because that test actually tells you something. A non-fasting glucose test after an unknown amount of time after eating an unknown amount of carbs is completely useless. I guess I would do the fasting test because more than likely it will come back normal and calm the nerves they needlessly created with the other stupid test.

@Ajsmommy: yup, I agree! Every friends I've had with GD was really petite. My larger friend just had a doctor that assumed because of her weight, she'd have some pregnancy complications. He seemed surprised every time all her tests (blood pressure and everything) were normal.

Did they tell you they were doing the test? I am currently pg w LO2 and this time when I had my first apt at 8 wks they told me there is a new test that can "pretest" me for gestational diabetes, they just did it along with all the other tests they do during the first appt. I guess I passed bc the next time I went to my specialist they said the results were updated and I was ok. They never told me a number though so I can't comment to yours. But they did it at my first apt, they didn't have me fast and they didn't warn me about it either. it was just told to me that it was something that could "catch it early". I wonder if that is what your office did too?

I still have to take the 1 hour test at 24 wks and if I fail that then i'll move onto the 3 hr (YUK).

ETA: you don't have to be overweight to have gestational diabetes.. I know two people who've had it and one is a marathon runner and the other is tiny/petite. Both generally healthy

@maybebaby8: I would not do the fasting test it seems pointless. Personally I would absolutely do the GTT later on. It's an important one. Even the healthiest of people can develop GD.

That's so odd. I'm almost 25 weeks and won't even have my glucose test until 28 weeks. I would maybe do the fasting test, but nothing after that until the normal testing they do later in the 2nd trimester.

@Anagram: It's the extra stress and worry they are putting me under. I always worried about my health even before I got pregnant so this is really putting it into overdrive. But, yes the co-pay thing pisses me off a little too especially since they raised our premiums/co-pays significantly this past year.

I'm not overweight or even close to it. The only risk I have is that my dad is a type 2 diabetic, but he is overweight and has a ton of other issues that I blame on his lifestyle.

This is my first baby so I can't think of anything that would make them think that. I'm on the smaller side and I was a smaller baby (6 pounds 1 oz).

@maybebaby8: Is it the extra testing in general, or the copay/expense you are objecting to most? I had a friend who was randomly asked to GD test earlier (well, it wasn't random I guess--she was overweight and maybe the doctor thought that meant she had a higher risk?), and she passed the first test with no issue. Then later, the doctor asked her to do the GTT early also (same reason I guess, the weight) and she had no problems that time either. She just did the tests early, but she is a teacher like me and we have really good insurance and don't pay extra for any of that stuff.

My midwife wanted me to do an early GD glucose screen and I did -- passed no problem and passed the normal one too. Not a big deal. Wouldn't hurt to do the early test and then you can tell them to go piss off :silly:

ETA my midwife was concerned with me having a big baby because I'm trying for a VBAC and my first was over 9lbs (and no GD). @maybebaby8: Not sure if you have any factors that would lead the OB to be concerned about baby size or anything else like that.

@MenagerieMama: That's exactly what I thought. Apparently they go by some pregnancy/gynecology association's ranges and that's where they are getting this number from. The nurse I talked to even told me that I was right and that blood sugar should be higher after you eat. I freaking ate chick fil a in the hospital parking lot before I went in, what did they expect?!

I had GD. Your plan of action makes sense, their measures seem totally wack compared to all the things I've learned/read. I think it's smart to tell them you'll take the fasting test. Chances are that will come back normal and then I'd definitely refuse the GTT until later in the pregnancy like normal. But if your fasting test comes back high I would prepare yourself that you might want to take the GTT early.

I was in super denial after my first GTT where the only number that was high (by two points) was my fasting number and made them give me another one which I completely failed, so it was what it was...
