I used to think it wasn't bad with my 1st... the more milk, the merrier! But it can cause tummy problems due to foremilk/hindmilk imbalance.

It did not affect my LO other than sputtering a bit. The only negative for me was that We got thrush twice and both times I had to throw my entire stash out.

For me, oversupply led to DD choking while feeding and eventually nursing strikes because the letdown was too forceful and spraying her in the face. It became very stressful for both of us. It took a long time of block feeding and ceasing pumping to get it to go down. Even now, at 6.5 months she still refuses to nurse sometimes.

ETA: Also, when it was really bad, DD would be hungry constantly because she was only getting the super watery fore milk. I could never satisfy her because she would only nurse for a few minutes at a time.

For me it was a great thing! I'd pump after each session and had a ton frozen for work.

A friend had a big oversupply and felt like it was hard to even leave the house for an extended period since she would leak or have to pump every few hours even if her son was nursing

Others have hit the high points. There is a difference between just being able to make a little more milk than your LO needs/being able to build a stash and having a real true oversupply.

It can be really uncomfortable for the LOs especially if they end up just getting a lot if foremilk as others have mentioned. I battled with it in the beginning and it's no fun!

For me, it wasn't an issue. No imbalance, no forceful letdown. I just had a huge freezer stash.

Imbalance, pain, extra gas, uncomfortable for baby, milk ALL OVER!

I had an awful oversupply with DS1. I don't with DS2, and it's a totally different experience.

My oversupply made my DS especially quite uncomfortable. It was like drinking from a fire hose for him with my fast letdown. No matter what I did for almost 3 months he choked and sputtered at the breast, then once he was able to catch up would gulp back milk with tons of air, because of fore-milk hind-milk imbalance he has green, frothy poop and dropped percentiles like crazy until I was able to reduce my supply to normal levels. It was really hard at the beginning. My DD I had the same issue but was much more aggressive at correcting my supply so she only suffered for a couple weeks.

There could end up being a hindmilk/foremilk imbalance. I also had a forceful letdown (not sure if that always goes along with oversupply), so she learned to be hesitant at the breast and would pull away.

I was always uncomfortable and felt unclean b/c I was leaking milk and getting it everywhere.

But my OB, pediatrician, and LC were all like, "This is a good problem to have!" I didn't feel that way, but I do see that it's better than struggling to keep up a supply.

Other than the risk of infection and painful engorgement, why is oversupply seem to be a bad thing? Or do you think it's a good thing?
