@Freckles: milk tainted with antibiotics is not allowed, organic or not. Though it is true that non organic animals are more often treated with antibiotics.

@hilsy85:  @zippylef:  Isn't it mainly due to ultra-pasteurization?

It's not clear what the benefits are, but there is less exposure to antibiotics (that they aren't allowed to give the cows) as well as any other pesticides that may be found in the food they eat. But it's true that there is no measurable effect on health, at least according to current science. Hormones don't really enter into the milk and affect us.

But i think when we're told that organic produce is better than conventional produce (and there is evidence that backs that up), we can't help but believe that we should get organic milk as well, especially if it's for our little ones. I think people also hear rbst/hormones, and get worried.

I'm a big believer in organics, but it's not the end of the world if i buy a non-organic carton one week.

I get ours from the farmers market and def notice a difference in taste! Plus, the well-being of the animal is very important to me and I like to support local farms and community!

I prefer the taste of organic (fresh, local) milk. We get ours that's from a local farm.

@MerryC: I'm jealous! There is only one milk delivery service in my city, and I'm outside the delivery area.

@MerryC: I grew up on a dairy farm, so our milk was always straight from the cow as well! I attribute my immune system of steel to this, heh. (That and actually playing outside. How thankful I am to grow up outside of the internet era, but that is another topic entirely.)

We are choosing to buy local, fresher milk (from the cow to us in 48 hrs or less) rather than organic. It's also just pasturized instead of ultra-pasteurized so it tastes better and richer. It's more expensive than regular costco milk, but cheaper than organic, and it's delivered to our door :)

I used to buy organic milk bc I thought of organic as a shorthand for healthy, but I no longer do. All organic milk at my supermarket is ultra pasteurized, so I think a lot of beneficial stuff is killed off thru heat. I just look for the regular milk that says no antibiotics, no hormones.

We've recently switched E to whole milk from breastmilk and I've been buying organic, just because I hadn't really had time to do my research. I was under the impression that conventional milk contained hormones that could effect him, but after doing some research that doesn't appear to be correct. The AAP has this to say:

There is no evidence of clinically relevant differences in organic and conventional milk.

    a. There are few, if any, nutritional differences between organic and conventional milk. There is no evidence that any differences that may exist are clinically relevant.

    b. There is no evidence that organic milk has clinically significant higher bacterial contamination levels than does conventional milk.

    c. There is no evidence that conventional milk contains significantly increased amounts of bovine GH. Any bovine GH that might remain in conventional milk is not biologically active in humans because of structural differences and susceptibility to digestion in the stomach.

They also explain that Estradiol and progesterone concentrations were lower in conventional milk than in organic milk.
http://pediatrics.aappublications.org/content/130/5/e1406.full

There are definite benefits to the animal in an organic vs. non-organic setting, but there doesn't seem to be a benefit to the health of the consumer.

So, why to you choose to use/not use organic milk? I guess I'm not sure if it's really worth it.
