I have had a love of writing since I was a child. I went to college with a declared major of journalism and added PR to my major while in school. I feel like it was a calling I have honed over the years.

I worked full time while putting myself through college nights/weekends, and my decision of major was partially directly impacted by this. I really had a passion for social work and was really interested in getting a BA + MA in social work….but getting that BA would have required a few semesters of (unpaid) internship, and I just couldn’t financially swing that. Not even close. (As an aside, this is one of the many reasons I am saving for LO’s college now – I don’t want her to have to limit her choices.)

So I majored in political science. Just having a degree opened many doors, didn’t really matter that much what it was in. I’ve spent my career yeas so far in different corporate law department functions in 2 different industries. I’m 10 years out from college, and although I really like what I do, I still sometimes sort of wish I had been able to major in social work. :meh:

@Anagram: I think if I hadn't gone the route I had gone, I might have gotten my MLS. I  libraries! We have a similar educational background (although my major was linguistics), but I ended up in publishing (but within a large accounting firm, not stand-alone).

I studied linguistics and psychology in university (near-minor in psychology, but was missing one course) with the view of applying to grad school for speech language pathology. After graduation, I took a couple of general physiology courses that were required for SLP while I worked retail, but eventually decided that I wasn't really motivated to go back to school. Applied for some jobs and ended up with my current publishing company at an accounting firm (9 years this summer)! Started out as data entry/research/formatting/website posting, but the job has morphed into an editorial role, which is exactly what I've always wanted to do.

I dropped out of college because of a hurricane and never went back. I worked retail jobs for a most of my 20s, then when I decided to go back to work after E I took the civil service exam and was placed in my current job (I process applications for a county assistance office). A few more years here and I can be a caseworker, which wouldn't have been my first choice, but I think I'll be good at it.

Science has always been my best/favorite subject, and I've always wanted to do something healthcare related. I started out pre-pharm, but there were too many math prerequisites and I HATE math, so I changed to nursing. I am incredibly happy with my decision.
Now the decision to join the military- came out of the blue. I was getting antsy after a couple of years working in the ED and the military was my answer for my need for change. 3 years later and I'm still happy with my decision.

I choose my major b/c it was broad and I truly had no idea what I actually wanted to be so I took business administration/marketing. I ended up in my job by happenstance and I've stayed with the same company for 15 years, switching dept's. I don't love my job and ultimately I'd like to get into HR or training but not sure i'll be able to.

@hotchildinthecity: pr/communicators who understand finance are pretty rare! I bet if you wanted to switch you could combine the two for an interesting job - and potentially more money than a generalist PR person... Especially in a big city.

My dad got me an internship at his company (a large international bank) the summer I graduated college, and after floating around a bit I ended up in IT, and after a couple of years I ended up actually building and maintaining servers. So at my very non-technical college I looked into majoring in Computer Science, but all you could learn was software development and I didn't want to do that. So I majored in Communications and and took all the Digital Media classes my school offered (3), TAed in them after I ran out... and ended up in digital media marketing. I contemplated a career change many times, but I keep ending up here and now I'm really enjoying growing my career.

My original plan was to do a M.S in Genetic Counseling or in Counseling with an emphasis on Reproduction ( Marriage/ Infertility). Ended up getting hired out of college to work in Consumer/Market Research for a Fortune 500 company and I love it!

@snowjewelz: Yup and I know right?! Especially Asian parents??? My parents said it was a too strenuous career with long years of school/residency. By the time I finish just the school portion, I'd be too old to date/get married/start a family since dating while in med school might be difficult with the long hours.

Fortunately, I'm happy where I am in life right now so while I do still dream about it, reality is keeping me grounded. :)

I am a science nerd... But I spent many years trying to do anything but medicine (what my parents wanted me to do). Finally at 28 I went to med school. (It's never too late-- there was a 45 year old with grown kids in my class).

I studied International Relations and double majored in Economics, had no idea what I wanted to do.. Just wanted a job? Then somehow I landed into the fashion industry with an internship, and here I am almost 10 years later. I liked that I was in "business" but not trading or crazy wall street stuff that I'm not cut out for... And at the same time it's fashion so it's relatable and "fun".

I always loved science, nature and the outdoors. For all of high school I thought I wanted to go into a medical field. However, my university environment was really competitive in those areas--everyone competing to get into medical school, to the point where they would shield their NOTES from you in order to do better than you on a test. This was SO not for me, and I switched my major to environmental science and took AMAZING classes in things like herpetology, ecology, resource management, forestry, environmental economics, etc. I LOVED it. Still do.

After graduation, I worked abroad for several years in natural resource management, then attended graduate school in public policy, with a focus on environmental policy & natural resource management (classes in law, finance, economics, etc). The two degrees complemented each other really well.

Of course now I'm working in academic health sciences on the research side. It's not a dream job, but it has been a really great learning experience. I will probably stay here another 2-3 years, and then look for something closer to my own heart. Luckily I work at a large, state university, so there are many opportunities to do this sort of thing.

I wouldn't say that I've found my dream career yet, but every step I've taken has nudged me a little bit closer!!

I always knew I wanted to be in a "helping profession" of some sort. For a long time I thought I wanted to be a pediatrician, but I realized I didn't want to be in school that long. So then I decided on psychology, but once I got to college I didn't like the psych department - I felt like they were all stuffy and stuck up. I actually ended up taking a semester off, and while I was out I read about social work, and it seemed to be a fit for what I wanted.

Lots of math and science lovers on this thread!

I was always a pretty creative person. I LOVED my art classes and if I could have taken only art, math and science in high school I would have been a happy camper. I wanted to be a cartoonist in junior high, but I did a research paper and interviewed a cartoonist and realized that I couldn't make much of a living doing that alone. So when I was considering how to make a living doing something creative, graphic design was the best route. Back then it was known as commercial art. I've always been happy in my field, found lots of options and routes to take at different times in my life. And now I'm at another fork in the road with my new job, focusing on interactive design, and wondering if I pursue this, or maybe pour my creativity into my kids for a while.

Similar to previous posters, I enjoyed math and science, so my mom encouraged an Engineering major. I briefly considered medical school, but when I graduated, I got a job in IT consulting. After a couple years I realized I may have been too hasty dismissing medical school and becoming a doctor. Took a couple years to get my stuff in order and get accepted but now I'm in medical school!

I always knew I wanted to leave my home town, travel and see the world. I studied international affairs at a top rated program that required study-abroad for the international affairs majors. You could leave for up to 3 semesters. I only went for 2 but wish I had done 3! I think the experience served me well, even though I don't have a job directly related to my major.

Haha... honestly, I grew up in a very small town that I was desperate to get out of. I had near perfect grades and got into every prestigious university I applied to but my parents encouraged me to stay home and commute to the nearest slightly bigger town to go to community college. So I picked my desired major based solely on the options that weren't available at community college, so I'd HAVE to move away for school. It worked out well though. I have a pretty good job in my field (Criminology/Psychology) that I actually really like.

I went to school for political science and journalism. I figured I would end up going into journalism, but as I saw what the job market and starting salaries looked like, I decided on a different path and went into marketing communications. I work in corporate communications now and have not one regret!

I was always really good at (and enjoyed!) math and science so engineering was a natural fit. But I was definitely pulled more towards the science side which was why I chose Biomedical Engineering. I did a ton of research while I was in school (all 4 years) and determined that that was really what I preferred in terms of the real world application of my engineering degree.
