My radiologist legit argued with me about my due date after my 20 week scan. The baby consistently measures dead on against my LMP, but I have long cycles and I know when I ovulated and my RE and midwives gave me a later due date - the baby is just a little bit big. This radiologist was so insistent about it being WRONG, and I eventually just told him to take it up with my midwives, who were basically just like "shut up."

My OB bases the date on the 7-8 week ultrasound, unless the baby is measuring significantly off by 5+ days. Then my OB would do another scan at 11-12 weeks and based on the two scans decide. It doesn't change after that.

@MamaBehr: interesting! My 2nd was 7lbs 3oz at 37 1/2 weeks. Let's see what this one will be. I would prefer to make it to the 39 weeks. DS2 had jaundice which I'd like to avoid if I can (coming early is a risk factor). I liked having a bigger baby!

They wouldn't change it with my first even though I know they were at least 3 days off! I got my BFP at 9 dpo, so there was no way I'd have gotten my positive at 6 dpo. I was very confident in my dates because I had been charting, too. At the first ultrasound, I measured 6w1d when I should have been 6w4d. At every ultrasound after that, I measured at least 4 days AHEAD of my own dates and they still wouldn't change it.

I had him at 39w1d (by their dates) and he was almost 9 lbs.

My OB won't change dates. I don't really think much about it because I know I won't make it 40 weeks. My son was born at 34 and daughter 36 weeks. My goal is usually 37 weeks.

If your doc is focused on improving their care quality they will not offer an elective delivery before 39 weeks and that is a good thing!!! Physicians are being asked to report on this quality measure for payment incentives and public c reporting initiatives, so you're probably not going to be able to persuade them to change it. Babies born electively before 39 weeks are more likely to need more intensive care. 37 weeks is now considered early term not full term like it used to be.

I've never heard of docs changing due dates after the initial dating scan, since the first 12 weeks give the most accurate due date.

@oliviaoblivia: thanks, but I know they won't change it. Just have to hope I go into labor before then!

@MamaBehr: With my 1st, he was huge. I still had to wait until 39 weeks. He was over 10 1/2 pounds. Thank goodness they'll at least due it at 39 weeks!

They never wiggled for me. I'm trying to push back my section date because I'm totally unsure of my dates but they are sticking to the dating scan due date.

Good luck.

@Mamasig: that's how it's always been with me, biggggg baby! But I'm always so surprised when people are like "well, my doctor just changed my due date to a week earlier"!

My OB bases the date in the ultrasound done around 8 weeks. It doesn't change after that. I don't see why it would. To me measuring ahead means a bigger baby, not an older baby.

Eta: At my hospital elective c sections can only be down starting at 39 weeks. Anything earlier would require it to be medically necessary. For me that happened because of low amniotic fluid.

I have been very sure if my dates both times (temping/charting the first time, very clear on exactly when it happened the second) and they set my due date based on conception date. And my 12 and 20 week scans have all lined up within a day or two. So nope, never wiggled at all for me.

Most friends have reported their doctors would change the dates unless they were more than a week off based on an ultrasound. Haven't heard of anything changing after 20 weeks.

The earlier scans are the most accurate for dating purposes. I believe ACOG guidelines currently recommend 39 weeks as the earliest for elective induction/scheduled csection unless there is a medical indication to do it earlier.

I guess embrace the fact that you know already what your LO's birthday will be?

I find it so interesting to hear about how relaxed some OBGYNs are about due dates. I have had four different OBGYNs and four pregnancies, and never had a doctor wiggle around on a due date. After the 12 week dating one and the 20 week anatomy scan, it doesn't budge, even though I consistently measure 2 to 3 weeks bigger.

Has anyone had their OBGYN change a due date after the 20 week scan? Or, like me, once it was set it was set?

Ps how can I talk my doctor into doing this! Currently have a csection scheduled for 12/28 but I really want baby hear around the 20th (39 weeks is actually Christmas, so he wouldn't be here that early)
