I have nursed my niece twice. Once I was watching her while my sister in law was out for a walk & niece was so tired but couldn't sleep so I nursed her for like 2 minutes until she dozed off. Another time we were visiting my sister-in-laws and took my niece sight-seeing with us while her moms were at work. I nursed her while we were out instead of bringing a bottle. Both times my sister-in-law was fine with it (we'd discussed it before hand each time as well).

If it was someone I was less close to, I don't know. But if I was close enough to talk about it with them, if probably be close enough to do it.

@Foodnerd81: Apparently, it was this whole church debacle (I can imagine why) and the child never found out.
I don't think there are words for how pissed I would be.

@simplyfelicity: um yeah that's an entirely different story! Yikes. I would be mad if someone fed my baby anything other than what I handed them, much less nursed them.

This does remind me of a time ( many years ago...) when a church nursery volunteer nursed someone else's baby so they didn't have to disturb the mother in church (unbeknownst to the mother...yikes.) Obviously, we are taking about having the mother's permission here.

I would, wouldn't bother me. Of course, I would never do it unless it was requested, I don't just go around taking others babies and feeding them. Unless it was an emergency and there was no mom to be found.

@Mamaof2: 😊 and such an easy way to figure out how baby's latch is! It's so true that nobody can teach you what a good latch should feel like, but once you know, you know.

I'd do it as long as she's comfortable too. Before I actually had a baby I would've thought it's weird, but now honestly, I'd totally feed a hungry baby in need and would want my baby to be fed too in a similar situation!

The closest I ever got was this stranger in an airport bathroom. Her baby was probably just over a month and screaming. I had my baby with me and she started apologizing bc she was crying too and said she'd had unexpected surgery and lost most of her milk so her baby was very frustrated and still rejecting the bottle. I tried to offer a few words of comfor and said I was sitting right outside if she needed anything. She came out much happier with her baby taking the bottle. I figured baby had to learn and it was better to not offer but it was such a heartbreaking scene.

I think it would be weird only because it is so against the social norm. Aside from that I feel like villages of moms have done this all along. I dont think it is weird at all, though practically speaking I think it would take a special set if circumstances.

@Foodnerd81: our babies are less than a week apart. It was my second baby and her first and she was struggling with nursing. She wanted me to nurse her baby and see how I thought her baby was latching. So I did. There are three or four people I would be fine swapping nursing with. I also gave a bunch of pumped milk away to friends and family since my second baby won't take a bottle.

Pumped milk I think either of us would in a heartbeat, no problem. It's the physical act of nursing that seems weird to me.

@Truth Bombs: @PinkElephant: we were talking about that tonight- if they won't take bottles, will they take another set of boobs?

The one time I'm most worried about with the bottle refusal is this weekend, when we are leaving them with my parents overnight. My mom nursed me and my siblings, but she has informed the baby that that well ran dry many years ago. 😉

I would happily nurse another baby or let someone else nurse my lo if it made sense. Lo1 was always perfectly happy with a bottle and a very good nurse I am sure he would have taken milk from someone besides me no problem. My mom nursed my cousin and my aunt nursed my sister when they were having trouble getting supply going and learning to nurse, it helped everyone.

I have donated pumped milk to a bunch of strangers, but I know I would feel weird about nursing another baby. If the situation arose though I would try to get over it and logically I have no issue doing it. In your situation, it really sounds like it would help you and your friend out a lot if you were able to get over the mental hurdle and do it! I say suggest it to her, the worst that can happen is she thinks it's weird. Could work out really well for you both.
