@jholler25: LOVE that mobile. we have a similar style of one up for Pierson ovre his changing table (Expt its circles). for his crib we have one that plays music and turns, he LOVES the music on it, its calming rhyminy music so it doesnt stimulate him to much.. ive also heard babies can see black and white and red eaiser when there brnad new.

Thanks everyone! That's a very good point that we wouldn't want TOO much stimulation over the crib, since we want her to SNOOZE! DH is funny. He works on an oil rig in the Mariner's Office (he drives the rig to make sure the water doesn't move it). So he's in there with the highest level people on the rig, including the Captain. And I think they sit around and talk about stuff the way we chat about things on here. I am pretty sure that they sit at the monitors and watch the computers, and somehow topics like crib mobiles come up. So he thinks he knows what he's talking about, bless his heart.
The thought just cracks me up....

@anonysquire: @Mrs. Superhero: In theory, I know it'd be a great DIY project. But I am so not talented. Or patient enough to DIY pretty much anything. I suck at crafts:)

@jholler25: You could totally DIY that with pink paper or pink paint chips, a butterfly paper cutter, an embroidery hoop and fishing string!

Ooh, that's so pretty! I think that would be perfect for over her cot - it's a simple enough design where it's not going to overstimulate her, but the shape of the butterflies will likely fascinate her.

To appease your DH, maybe look for a more stimulating mobile for over the change table. We moved our more stimulating mobile to the change table and it has made nappy changes a thousand times easier!

We had the fisher price projection mobile, we used it for all of 4 months I think. It was a gift, but I wouldn't have bothered with it if I had to buy it. We actually just sold it too!

M loves both of her mobiles. One has three teddy bears that circle around, the other has a few sea creatures. They're both pretty plain but they move and they have soothers with them. I love watching her giggle at her mobiles. I would get one that has a soother with it or get one to go on the crib.

I would think that soothing is nicer then stimulating for over a crib...but I'm not much of a believer that flashy things make kids smarter :)

We got a PBK mobile (we actually call it a stationary because it doesn't actually move) that is fairly simple. I like to think of bed for sleeping not playing, so we wanted something simple, and not overly stimulating. Ours is sheep jumping over a wood fence

Our pediatrician and BIL (also a doctor) advised getting simple ones with colors like red, white and/or black, with large, very simple designs for young babies. This was their suggestion for mobiles, books and toys. We haven't bought a mobile yet because LO spends hardly any time in her crib. The only books she likes are the ones they described - ones that feature only red, white and black and have very blocky, simple designs on them. Those she can stare at for a long time, the other picture books with more colors and things going on she doesn't really look at too much.

HHonestly, I am not sure.

I do know that the mobile that comes with our pack n play is super plain (just plain brown stars) but she still could stare at it for hours. I remember our pediatrician said that babies love to stare at repeating patterns....so maybe that PB one would be perfect!

Does the type of mobile really matter for a baby? Dh said she needs one with sparkly stuff and lots going on, that he thinks it's better for development - I don't know where he gets his info from but the one I love is this one:

http://www.potterybarnkids.com/products/pink-butterfly-mobile/?pkey=bdecor-mobiles-and-hanging-decor#reviews

Is this too simple for baby development? Or are they all the same?
