I wear ear plugs because I am a very light sleeper. I can still hear fusses and noises (not even full on crying) with them in and wake up. It just dulls all the other noises so i can sleep and stay asleep.

Funny, there is a white noise machine in their room but I never thought of one for ours! We ditched the monitor long ago because it just seemed to amplify noise. I will try a white noise machine for me!

@blackbird: Also do this with the one earplug out, pillow to ear.

I'm a light sleeper and also can't get back to sleep after wake ups well. So that's why I'm up at 6 am and not back and sleeping.

White noise app on my phone! I can still hear him when he needs me but when he makes noises but is not waking up I don't hear it.

I'm an extremely light sleeper and sleep with earplugs. Mostly I can hear him and wake up when my LO cries, but occasionally I will sleep through it and my DH will get up and tend to him. We keep the monitor on DH's side of the bed.

I wear earplugs sometimes. My husband will get up with them-but also, I can totally hear my two year old through them if she gets going. Sometimes I just put one in one ear-the one not against the pillow. Or I tell my husband I'm putting them in-they're bright yellow so he can also tell when I have them in.

Why don't you try a white noise machine in your room?

I actually wear earplugs but can still hear any "important" noise. They do help me, usually, just to block out the smaller noises that LO makes when he's sleeping or wakes up momentarily. Also, the noise of his white noise machine through the monitor helps a lot too.

I can totally relate to the anxiety produced by waiting for any crying to start!

I also sleep with a white noise machine and keep my bedroom door open. You can still hear the kids if they start really crying but it drowns out the normal sleep noises they might make.

I sleep with a white noise app on my phone on my bedside table. I can totally hear my 22 month old when she really cries, but can sleep through the one-off sounds she makes. That is with her door totally shut and our door just cracked--but we are in a condo and her door is about 5 feet from our door.

When she's really up--you can't miss it because she stands in her cribs and literally screams. I'm sure even our neighbors can hear that.

Can you get a white noise machine? Then have a monitor on and you will wake up when they are crying.

My house is fairly small, and my twin 2-year-old boys are pretty much across the hall from us. I am a light sleeper. Most mornings I hear some sort of sleep sound from one of them at 4:30 or 4:45. They are not waking up (well, sometimes they are), but they have gone through phases of waking up pre-5am for weeks on end. That dread alone seems to keep me awake. So I'll hear a little cry or groan from one of them and I just can't get back to sleep. What do other light sleepers with kiddos do? I can't bring myself to wear earplugs because I feel like I need to be able to hear them if something is actually wrong.
