Someone on my Facebook feed posted this article yesterday.
https://rachelobrienibclc.com/blog/you-get-what-you-expect-low-milk-supply-and-psychology/
It talks about self fulfilling prophecies and relating to breastfeeding. Obviously even if you're positive from the start that doesn't mean everything will be easy but I do think that going into it with a negative feeling of things already being wrong could make things even harder.

Basically I wouldn't worry about it and would assume it won't be an issue!

So it's funny, my right breast is larger (and always has been larger) than my left. But when I was nursing my DD, my left always produced more milk even though it was smaller!

My breasts did not grow at all during pregnancy, and I EBF for 6 months and am still nursing (he's almost 7 months, just eating solids now too :))

I did have supply issues initially but that was more to do with the size of my breasts and some latching difficulties (I have large breasts).

I had huge success with supplements, so if you do note that you're having difficulties after your milk comes in:
a) see a lactation consultant ASAP
b) get some supplements - either a combo of Fenugreek + Blessed Thistle, or Milk+ (it actually mentions for mothers who's breasts didn't grow in pregnancy in their description). The window for supplements helping is supposedly 4 weeks.

Also - like others have mentioned lots of people only breastfeed on one side. I do find one side produces more than the other, and that's common also!

Best wishes, just set yourself up for success with support! And also I want to add that it is a myth that breastfeeding doesn't hurt, there is certainly an adjustment period for your nipples, and then one day it just doesn't hurt anymore!

And some more of the best advice? Never quit on your hardest day :)

Mine are not the same size and I always felt the smaller one produced more milk. I was especially worried because I had a lump removed, thankfully benign, from that side before getting pregnant with my 2nd and I had a 2 1/2 inch scar. I had no issues with breastfeeding after surgery and still had a large amount of milk. Does your doctor/pediatrician have a lactation consultant? I met with them before I gave birth for a consultation because of the surgery. If it worries you, you might discuss it with them.

Neither of mine changed size much during pregnancy, and I've had no issues BFing. EBF for nine months now. Try not to worry! Also, I do know people who nurse exclusively from one side for a variety of reasons, so even if it came to that, it's still doable.

@kes18: Yes, get your newborn checked for lip and tongue tie....that was our issue and it was not diagnosed until quite late in the game and it caused all kinds of issues it shouldn't have!

I think uneven breasts is normal, so not sure if that's an issue. FWIW my breasts never grew that much (was a small C cup pre-pregnancy and maybe just was a fuller C cup during pregnancy) and I have been able to wear my normal bras through 2 babies and pregnancies (when not nursing of course). I had no issues, EBF both babies (no formula) and didn't wean my first until she was 25mo. My second is just 6mo. I had more of an oversupply with my second (1400oz in the freezer) but still had plenty with my first (saved 300oz in the freezer). We had no issues with latching. Most of the latching issues seems to either be from baby (tongue or lip ties) or mom (flat or inverted nipples). You can check out your nipples before so you have an idea.

I also had boobs of different sizes, and the smaller one did make less than the larger one, but this was not responsible for my difficulties BFing. I had a forceful letdown and DS had a shallow latch (due to tongue tie), and be actually preferred feeding from the smaller boob! IMO, BFing is hard and I wouldn't borrow too much trouble worrying excessively before baby is born. Just know who you can seek BF help/support from and be kind to yourself!

ETA: I got so much milk out of the bigger boob I could have sustained DS on that milk alone, so please don't worry!

@Veggie: 1. i put on like 5 cup sizes in each pregnancy, no issues
2. i personally know of two women who actually successfully breastfed from only one breast.

you never know till you know. no point worrying about it

Sounds like me. I nursed and pumped with my first until I got pregnant when he was 16 months and he weaned. My second is two and still nursing. I didn't need to supplement. I did notice when pumping that one produced more than the other, but that is common.

That's normal as far as I know.

I'm about the same size as you and I had other issues (well my LO did plus I had bad PPD/PPA) that caused us to stop but no supply issues. With my second I had been really sick while pregnant and I was taking meds and wasn't going to bf (planned out with my doctors) and I just bf'd for colostrum and then tried to pump wean and just could not get the milk to stop for weeks, lol.

I doubt that it will be an issue! One of mine is larger, and that side actually produced a little less milk while I was breastfeeding. My toddler breastfed with no issues until 19 months. Mine also don't really increase in size during pregnancy, just after my milk comes in when baby is born.

My smaller one actually produces more than my bigger one! It shouldn't make a difference at all.

Also, mine never changed sizes during pregnancy. It wasn't until I gave birth and my milk came in that they got bigger.

@Pollywog: @Maysprout: Oh thats great news! I've found things online about how it's normal, but nothing about how it may effect breastfeeding.

That sounds like me, the size diff is exaggerated in pregnancy and breastfeeding. It's never been a problem though with nursing!

I have one slightly bigger and it's exaggerated during pregnancy. I had no problems nursing. It did make more (about 2x when I pumped) but I nursed both sides no problem. In fact early on it was easier for kids to nurse on the smaller side as letdown was not so forceful.

@Veggie: Most likely it won't be an issue. Worst case, I've heard of someone who only breastfed on one side due to cancer. She nursed until 2. In my case, I have a big size difference and my little boob always produces more because LO likes it more.

I'm due with my first in a few months and hope to EBF but I'm worried about it due to my breasts. My right breast has always been about 0.5 cup larger than my left and since I've gotten pregnant the difference has gotten bigger. It seems like my left breast hasn't increased in size at all. I know having different sizes is normal, but I worry that my left doesn't have any milk glands or won't be able to produce anything and it'll all be up to my right. I have had some leaking from my right, typically in the middle of the night. Does anyone have experience with this?

If it matters at all, before getting pregnant I was comfortable in a B cup bra but now my right is very tight in a C.
