hmm.. ok. I don't think I am forcing/pressuring her. Actually, she is the one telling me "poo poo" for both. So I lead her to the bathroom. After the crying today, I don't even take her to the bathroom, the door is just open and her little potty is there. She actually ran to the bathroom a few times on her own, and peed once in the potty (1/2) and all over the bathroom floor (twice). So I feel like there is just something weird about her not wanting to sit on the potty all of the sudden. Maybe after she's better she'll do better. I'm not pressuring, but I've noticed she doesn't seem to like wearing the diaper now. She grabs at it, constantly telling me "poo poo." I read that 20-22 months is often a window period you might catch for earlier PTing. But of course, if she's kicking and screaming, I don't want to continue.

Agreed with PP, sounds like she needs a break. And when she's ready it'll click for both her and you. Also since she's been sick she's probably not feeling like herself. My DD is finally getting the hang of the potty at 32 months.

I totally understand, H hates sitting on the potty with all of her being! She knows when she has to poop, she'll even say "pooh pooh" sometimes but runs away or knocks my hands away if I try to carry her on the potty and says "no, no." So I just let her poop in the diaper. I don't want to force the issue until she feels ready.

My BIL actually very effectively poop potty trained my niece by whistling for her while she sat on the potty. So whenever she needed to poop, she would mimic a whistle sound with "ssssssss" sounds and only poops on the potty starting at 12 months old. I don't know how to whistle so I think I am going to buy a toy whistle and try this with H.

We had to take a break with E. He had been sitting on the potty every night before bath and then suddenly he so very not into it. After a break of a few months, we're really getting into it and he's much more interested.

Sounds like she's not ready, you can continue to encourage her to try, but I wouldn't push it so you don't scare her off of it for awhile.

Sounds like you guys need a break. I know how frustrating it can be to have false starts and regressions, but it's even more frustrating to keep trying something that doesn't work. She will get there in the end! If it's any consolation, my LO was about 30 months when it all finally clicked.

She is so young still, I wouldn't push it. My nephews and friend's LOs still have issues with the potty cause the parents pushed it.

I haven't potty trained yet, but I agree with the PP's. We're going to try next week, but if she's not into it or it isn't clicking, we're not going to push it. We'll try again in a couple months. I'd say, let her lead the way.

I would give in and try later. Our daycare doesn't start working with them seriously until 2 and must be PT by 3. I could have PT DS at 19 months because he was totally ready but I wasn't with a newborn. He regressed, so I just said screw it!

My friends had some early success with their toddler (born in March 2013) but she is currently going through a bad regression so they are scrapping PT and will try again later.

@shopaholic: J just turned 3 and our ped was happy that he was 'working on potty training' and advised that we continue to encourage but not pressure him.
Most of the time he tells us when he has to go and one of us helps him to the bathroom (he has a small, floor potty and a potty seat on the toilet - his choice). But there are plenty of times where he'll say, "uh, peeing in my Pull-Up now". I just tell him, "that's okay, next time let me know and we'll go to the potty".
Our preschool follows the no pressure approach, too and insists that no one graduates still in their diapers/pull-ups.

LO is 21 months. We introduced the potty at 12 months just to get her used to sitting and not be scared. She's gone a few times (both pee and poop), but maybe by fluke or chance. The past few sick days at home I've been more concentrated on going diaper-less at home. Today has been terrible. She KNOWS when she has to go, tells me, but REFUSES to sit on the potty. When she has to go, she flips out, screams, cries, just wants me to hold her, etc. I know she can hold it, she did this on/off for 3 hours and when she FINALLY does go, it's standing and she swishes her hands back and forth down there, flinging pee or poop all directions! Ugh! I don't know why now that she knows, she is flipping out on the potty and refuses to sit down. iPad, books, songs, and treats don't work. Sitting on the potty is nothing new.

Any tips or advice?
