My son starts sixth grade this year, that's when I remember brands being uber important! At my school it was Adidas coats! I'm thankful the charter school ds goes to has uniforms! As high end designer as. I get for him is Gap, Hurley, Quicksilver and the like. DD has higher end clothes but I've bought them used or on super sale! I also thrift shop for dsd's clothes, mind you I only buy quality like new clothes. We pay their Mom quite a bit a month and she splurges on their clothes ;)

I also recall in either eighth grade or my freshman year I did really well with my grades and I'd been coveting a Dooney & Bourke small bag, my Mom took me out and bought it for me! I had that purse until well into my 20's! I knew the value of a dollar and I hope to teach my children that as well.

Hell to the no. I'd be happy to let her save her allowance and even to help her find extra ways to earn money to save up. But that's it.

I think there will be balance, just like I have. I'm not so much about the name as I am about the quality. A pair of shoes that will last an entire season? Yep, I'll spend a little extra. A random tshirt.... nope! lol! I also agree with PP's commeting about outlet, and sale shopping!!

DH and i have talked about this. Our plan is to tell our kids that we'll buy them clothing/shoes but if they want something that's more expensive, we'll only pay $x and they have to save up the rest to buy it.

We really don't want our kids to value designer clothes. My preference is that they care more about quality than quantity.

Um when you said designer I thought "Gap" and only on special occasions! $100 jeans? Hell to the no! If they want it so had they can get a job then buy it themselves.

I've never had $100 jeans! No way.

@Mrs. Pen: this. I think there should be a healthy ground between getting this stuff for them and also making kids feel like pricey items should be earned or at least SWIPED AWAY if grades slip up or attitudes get out of hand.

It depends on the brand/item... I might buy them a few things but I won't stick their wardrobe with $100 jeans on a consistent basis.

I plan to do their shopping at gap, old navy, the children's place, target- just as I do now and usually shopping clearance and sales/using coupons.

I would be willing to treat them to one more expensive piece of clothing for their birthday, if they get good grades etc..

Not unless it was a special occasion like a Christmas or birthday present. We shopped Target and Mervyns (which doesn't exist anymore) when I was a kid, and now most of my clothes come from Old Navy. My hubby wears the cheapest clothes ever so he would not even entertain the idea...

I don't foresee spending an exorbitant amount on clothes (like legit designer stuff) but I'd probably dress my child in the same caliber of clothing that I dress myself and my husband in. We wear Gap, Banana Republic, Nautica, etc.

I remember wanting all of the designer stuff when I was a kid and for the most part, I got it, but I'd have like one or two pairs that I had to make last. If a stupid pair of jeans is the difference between my kid feeling like he/she fits in or being picked on then sure, why not?

Yes-
But, I am realllllly good at finding name brand at TJMaxx and the like. I am also gotten killer deals on handbags and shoes ebay so I'll probably take that skill on with LO. I already have...Most all if not all of LOs stuff that is 9m+ is name brand but yet I've paid just as much for it as I would have if it weren't because I searched high and low for deals.

I remember wanting Guess jeans as a middle schooler. My mom mades me save for them and buy them on my own. And wouldn't you know, they didn't make me any more special or popular and I was out a lot of $$$! It was a good lesson to learn.

If it was on sale, sure. Otherwise, probably not. I can't justify spending a butt load of money on clothes they'll quickly outgrow or tear up. Plus, I don't want them to "flaunt" it in front of other kids that they're wearing "nicer" clothes.

On sale I would. And for Christmas or a birthday. I do the same for my husband who loves designer stuff, haha. Though I will say that's obviously different since we work and aren't growing anymore! But I think buying some designer things for kids is fine for special occasions.

It will depend on cost and quality. When I was in school it was very cool to have Abercrombie, but my mom hated that store because she felt the quality was so low. I won't want my little girl to get made fun, so I will buy her within reason what she wants, just as my parents did for me.

I like designer stuff too, but I don't plan on putting my kids in it. For one thing, I don't run around in the play ground and ruin my clothes. And secondly, I'm not growing a mile a minute and wear my jeans and stuff for a years so I can justify the expense. I didn't get into designer stuff until I made my own money and learned to justify the cost for myself. I don't want to set the bar high and for the kid to think that $100 jeans are the norm and always expect that.

For their general wardrobe we'll stick with old navy, gap, etc. And buy stuff at TJ Maxx like Polo clothes. I won't be stocking them up with designer outfits.

pfft they won't be getting designer anything ever. When I was a teenager I bought all my clothes at value village and I did just fine. Infact, I loved it! It was an important lesson to not get wrapped up in that crap. To me "designer" stuff is such a waste of money.

ETA: And that goes for even their own money from babysitting/a part time job. That is another lesson that I want to teach my kids. Just because you have money doesn't mean you can spend it on anything you want any any given time. I want to teach the discipline required to spend money wisely and build real wealth.

No, unless they were on sale and very good quality (and something she could/would wear for a while). Designer doesn’t always mean it’s better quality, and I’m not shelling out just so she can say to her friends that she has X-brand bag/shoes/jeans, because that just seems braggy.

No way. I grew up wearing the cheapest of cheap clothing and while I complained, I knew that "designer clothes" (and for me, Gap was considered designer) I had to have a good report card or something to justify my parents buying anything from there.

Right now, all of LO's clothes are Gap, Carter's, or Old Navy and even I think that's going all out. But times are changing...We'll see in about 10 years!
